Dear Mike0367:
With my Savage Stevens Favorite Model 30R17 .17HMR pivoting-block single-shot mounting a BSA Sweet Seventeen 18X, I tested every brand and weight of .17 HMR, fascinated with this little high velocity rim-fire that had crept by me while I worked hard as a full professor nursing a heart-valve condition and then felled by the necessity of open-heart surgery. Good luck- the heart was in fine condition otherwise and the St. Jude aortic valve gave me the best circulation in a long life. I was up by Christmas 2003 and saw the little 30R17 .17HMR in Walter Craig's. It was my Christmas present. Shooting Hornady .17 17gr V-max first with iron sights I was delighted to find groups of 1.25" at 100 yards 2.75" at 200 meters, 4" at 300 meters, and 7" at 400 meters. It was delightfully accurate, and as surprising as a chihuahua taking bears. Later, as more brands of ammo appeared I got to try CCI .17 HMR 17gr. V-max quickly finding that it liked to be fired from a clean dry bore. I got 1.12" at 100 yards, then a close 2.5" at 200 meters, beyond which it and the Hornady were neck and neck, and this from a 4.25 Lb rifle. I did find the CCI's availability to be better. As for CCI .22 WMR my model 30GM with iron sights does quite well with the 40 gr. HP and FMJ .5" at 50 yards 1.5" at 100 yards, 3" at 200 meters, and a little better with the 30 gr. V-Max. No doubt about it, CCI makes good ammo. One thing I have noticed- a lot of barrel heat buildup in 5 shot groups in the Favorites' slender octagonal barrels. But my accuracy is good with CCI and the target is hit and the game falls, so my ammo bag is always full. Single shots have some advantages.

I have used then all... I re-zero between ammo change... Would readily use any in the Savage, depending on the animal hunted... Currently use CCI 17 TNT (Fox hunting).
