Thinking about upgrading the old Leupold.
Curious what others are running on the older Kimber SA 22LR's.
My rifle has the rear sight ramp.

For squirrel hunting, I like the 4.5-14 Leupold. Older ones were available in gloss. Many would say that the 4-12 gloss is a better "fit" for the gun. Regardless of what glass I have used, no squirrel has ever complained about my choice.

If you can find one, I think an old Leupold 8 x33 would be about perfect. Not too common, they actually have a design connection to Kimber and are in a very usable power. I put one on a Kimber Hunter pictured in #623 on the picture thread.
One of the challenges is that the older SA's like yours require a scope with a long tube because the distance between the rings is pretty long, so many of the usual scopes one could use are too short. That issue is actually why the rare Kimber scopes are so long.

It looks like the OP's receiver is also grooved, and he wouldn't need to mount the front ring on the 1/4 rib, possibly eliminating the need for a longer Leupold, and possibly looking better...but that's just me. I agree the 4-12x would look better, and using a 4x booster on a new 4-12x would boost it to a 6-17x magnification. Not sure the older gloss 4-12x scopes would accept the BullsEye booster, though.

Actually the front receiver ring isn’t grooved on the early SA’s which makes scoping them a little bit of a challenge because of the distance you have to span. The other issue is that the groove spacing is wider than the 11mm that KoO finally settled on so finding rings is an issue especially if you want to mount a scope with a larger front bell and want a higher ring.

For that rifle, with those open sights, the only upgrade that I would consider, would be a gloss 2-7 rimfire special (which has the same size ocular and objective, and about a half inch longer). It is no longer offered,so it would have to be sourced in the used market.

Scopes for Kimber rifles (SA and others)

I find that the Leupold 6 compact is an ideal size for a Kimber. It's larger front bell (though not as big as on their 6X36mm) just balances things perfectly and they have a fairly long mounting span.

Thanks the reply's everyone.
These older Leupold M8 scopes sure still bring a pretty penny.
I wish Leupold still made gloss finish scopes to go on nice rifles like these.

They do, but only through the custom shop, where gloss finish now adds the ridiculous premium of $250.

The 4x gloss rimfire scopes of all vintages do well in the resale market, but don't be too influenced by the high price speculators on ebay, who sit on their goods for quite a while.
