Sandy Creek wma squirrel hunting rendezvous

1. This hunt is going to happen Oct. 28-31, 2021.

2. If you're reading this, you are invited.

3. The hunt will take place at the Sandy Creek wildlife management area in south west Mississippi. This is a great place to hunt it has hills that have mast bearing trees mixed with areas of pine. You will find mostly gray squirrels in the hills. It also has some bottom land that is mostly mast bearing trees. There is lots of hog sign in the bottoms but you may see a hog anywhere on the wma. Shoot a small female hog if possible as they taste better. The bottoms have both gray and fox squirrel but mostly grays.

4. This is PRIMARILY a rimfire hunt. If you just have to bring a shotgun to hunt with we won't make fun of you.....too much. By that I mean we won't rib you to the point of exasperation but, it will be close.

5.The city closest to the hunt area is Natchez. Anybody who wants to make motel reservations should try to go there as it is the closest to the campground that is going to have motels. Natchez is about 10-15 miles away. There is a dollar general at the intersection of Hwy 28 and Hwy 33 a few miles from the wma.

6. Most of us plan to camp. There are 5 large campgrounds on the wma. Be forewarned...there are NO electrical hookups or drinking water! We do have drinking water available a short distance away but, there is none at the camp sites. If you need hookups you can stay at clear spring campgrounds in the Homochitta national forest which is about 20 minutes from Sandy Creek. You can also camp at the Natchez state park which is also about 20 minutes away.

7. Mississippi sells a non resident 7 day small game license for 38.00 plus a 3.00 agent fee and a 1.29 licensing fee. You will also need a non resident wma use permit for 30.00 plus a 1.00 agent fee and 1.29 licensing fee. You can buy them here https://www.ms.gov/mdwfp/licensing/login
Imformation about the requirements for a license can be found here: https://www.mdwfp.com/license/hunting/
General hunting regulations can be found here: https://www.mdwfp.com/law-enforcemen...ng-rules-regs/
Information about Sandy Creek WMA can be found here: https://www.mdwfp.com/wildlife-hunti...t/sandy-creek/
A license can also be obtained at the wall mart in Natchez. You can put the dates of the hunt on the permit and it will become activated at that time. The limit on squirrels is 8 per day 16 in possession.
Note! if you were born after Jan 1,1972, you will need a hunter safety certificate.

8. ALL GUNS MUST BE UNLOADED AND CASED WHEN INSIDE A VEHICLE AND YOU CANNOT HAVE A CENTERFIRE RIFLE OR PISTOL ON THE WMA

9. A list of things that you may want to know about would contain these items: skeeters, ticks, chiggers, poison ivy(lots!), rattlers, copperheads, and cotton mouth water moccasins. There are world class mosquitoes here!! Bring insect repellent with at least 30% Deet, you WILL need it! Thermocells work great around camp.

10. Women and children are welcome.

11. Rumor has it that a RFC member is going to cook some good stuff for those who attend. I will let him chime in on that.

Can you hunt hogs with those tags or do you need additional licenses?

You can shoot all the hogs you want. They are considered as a nuisance animal. The only catch is that it must be done with weapons legal for the season that is open at the time. This will limit you to rimfire and shotgun with shot no larger than #2. Deer archery season will be open also so that means they would be legal to take with archery equipment including a crossbow but, you would have to have an additional archery license for that.

That sounds like a good time. Depending on how my schedule goes, pencil me in. What type of squirrels are most common there?

If you hunt in the hills you will find mostly gray squirrels. There are some swampy parts down in the southern parts of the wma where you can find some fox squirrels. There's also LOTS of hog sign there in the bottoms. Be advised the english language does not contain words strong enough to describe how bad the mosquitoes are in the swampy bottom area's. When I go there I where a head net, thick long sleeve clothing and carry 40% deet repellant just in case.

Here's a link to the interactive map of the area https://mdwfp.maps.arcgis.com/apps/V...74372497099999
You can get different views of the map i.e. topo, satelite, ect., ect. by clicking on the base map icon in the toolbar in the upper left.
