what new gun ?

Only have 22 LR now and looking for something with more range for shooting paper. I can get 223 for about same cost as high end 17 hmr but don't want to start reloading at 68 years old.

New CZ look good with better trigger but almost same price in Canada as base aschutz so if go high end CZ might as well go Annie.

I live in rural area so if I resell it will be easier to sell hunting rifle. I do like wood so American cz with trigger job would work or the new tika Txi ls contender.

I know the anschutz would be good shooter but for resale in my rural area would be hard or would have to be hand down to my boys. I already have 1712 one boy has asked for.

No rush to buy so may wait to see how tika reviews or maybe with new aschutz gun coming out their old model may get discounted?

Cz all the way. See if you can get a deal on the 455 precision trainer in the fancy stock. The 455 triggers are generally good , and can be made lighter with a spring swap.

How many kids do you have but more importantly do the 'rest' of your kid(s) shoot, and be interested in a hand me down rifle dad enjoyed?

CZ 527

I have a CZ 527 in .223/5.56 chambering. It is quite pleasant to shoot and has the single set trigger for the occasion when you want a lighter trigger pull. Nice wood, good metal finish and bluing. I bought mine as a used gun for about $500 and feel that I got a really good deal! A gun I would highly recommend!

Exactly what i was going to recommend. I have no problem shooting under 1 moa with my little 527 carbine with relatively low cost fiocci 223 polymer tip box of 50. Moving up to my euro-varmint 1/2 moa easy, all day, with higher cost Hornady Vmax ammo. This accuracy is EASY at 200 yards. My clubs max range. Try that with a rimfire. The wind is kiss of death. I love shooting 22LRs, but; that is 50 yards. Cheap 223 ammo with beat any 22LR as you move out.

And as far as reloading, 223 is the least expensive cf rifle to shoot. I would never reload the 223. It makes no sense to me.

Then to argue the other side, if shooting paper with rimfire why increase the distance? I get all the challenge I need shooting 22LR at 50 yards. That is off the bench or standing, off hand.

also curious, how can the OP improve on a 1712 ? Certainly not a CZ or Tikka.

I cant tell from the OP's post if he wants another .22 rimfire , a 17 rimfire, a centerfire or what.

If you want to learn to shoot greater distances than 50 yards, stick with the .22 rimfire, you will learn more and more quickly than with a centerfire. I dont know a thing about .17's. Dont know how you will go about beating the Anschutz.

For centerfire, your CZ527 in .223 is a great choice, cant imagine anyone being unhappy with one.

I was looking for something a little different and have bought (but have not yet recevied) a CZ 527 Varmint in .17 Hornet. Recoil looks mild (on the Youtube videos) and performance at 100 yards looks promising.

Edit: The UPS guy just arrived with a small order of bullets. Man those .17's are tiny. I shouldn't be surprised because my air rifles shoot .177's, but looking at those polymer-tipped Hornadys makes me feel like I am looking the wrong way down a telescope. . .

More range for shooting paper, I'd say a CZ 527 in .223.

There are so many factory loadings for .223 you won't need to reload you own, you'll find a bullet weight and factory load that will shoot well.

With .223 in the CZ 527, I'd get a Varmint, both synthetic and walnut stocks can be found. Great single-set trigger, and wonderful quality at a very reasonable price.

Thanks for all feedback. 527 cz in good looking gun so I may keep look out for deal for up in Canada things are hit and miss on price.
223 does seem to be good deal as long as military keeps using.

what new gun

Just curious after checking no one mentions the tika 223 for the new rimfire gets good reviews and the price in Canada is about the same as CZ.

Tika has good trigger and easy to change and I know the CZ has single set if that is a good or personal preference?

I have anschuz with a two stage and never changed from the factory and works great but I find it is more of what you get used to and practice is what helps.

I have a 455 Canadian Edition in 17 HMR; perfect rifle for me. Very accurate, well made, and reliable. Looks good too.

It inspired me to buy a 455 Military trainer in .22 for our club shoots as my open sight rifle. I am winning with it too.

I like these two so much I have just bought a 452 lux in walnut for my scope class rifle.

Look no further than CZ.

Well Al if you had said "modern" rf then yes but a lot of the old (19th century) rf cartridges had more foot pounds of energy.
