Range report Rem 581 today, 50 yards, wind, 6X scope, 10 5X groups with SK Rifle Match. Average group 5/8" c-to-c, two at 1/2" or less. Not bad for an economy model. Not easy to bench, light weight, heavy trigger, and narrow fore-end. Black rings are 30mm in diameter, about 1.2".

Nice shooting! I just sold one that shot like that. Good carry rifle in the woods for squirrels.

I bought one at a local gun show a year ago that also shoots very much like that with an old MIJ 4X scope on it. I was very bummed to discover upon take down that it had serious rust underneath the barrel and back end of the receiver, but that’s only about a $100 blunder on my part and it shoots so well that it’s not the end of the world.

I’d wanted one because it’s kinda the little brother to my first deer rifle, a 788 I bought in ‘73. It’ll be a hunter like it’s big brother.

581's are a great gun and an awesome action. The trigger can get down to 3lbs by just cleaning and deburring then dropping a light spring in.
Here are a couple of mine

Iíve seen where quite a few guys are swapping out barrels on their 581ís, and was curious as to what kind of options were out there for this type of mod?
Would they be barrels from other rifles, or new blanks?

I have used both new blanks Shilin and Green Mountain and barrels off of Anschutz, Ruger 77/22. If you have a lathe you can do a lot.

Evelio McDonald put an Anschutz 1712 barrel in mine. I got it from a buddy that replaced it with a Lilja.

IIRC, he had spoken to the Annie North America custom shop, and the rep mentioned they had a lot of take off barrels for sale.

barrel

I put a 513 barrel on my 581 and then had the gunsmith bed it into a 541 stock. Put a Simmons 6x20 silhouette scope on it and my oh my does it shoot well!
Competes very well with my 54MS Anschutz...........

I really wish I did have a lathe, and a mill, so I won’t be doing any of this fancy smithn’, as much as I would love to .... so I’ll just go ahead and sell this 581 and buy something different, and let someone else play with it, rather than have to pay somebody else to do the work. That just wouldn’t be practical.
