BSA Challenger pawn shop find

A few months ago I was browsing a local pawn shop. I noticed a particular air rifle in the gun rack. I asked to see it, and immediately recognized it as a BSA Challenger in .177 caliber. I cracked the barrel open and sighted down the bore. The gun was somewhat beaten up, there was some surface rust from handling, and some "nimrod" drilled a hole in the stock with a metal cap over the hole to store pellets. I bought it for $50.00 out the door. After taking it apart I noticed very little wear on the metal parts, but it was in dire need of new seals and mainspring, so I ordered the parts from TW chambers in England. The parts come in very quickly, and everything matched the gun perfectly. I filled the hole in the stock with a maple plug, sanded it all down and refinished the European Birch with a dark stain and several coats of Tru-Oil. The metal parts were polished down to 800 grit and re-blued. I installed a Hammers 3X9X32 scope. After cleaning the bore and treating all moving metal parts with moly paste, the little rifle shoots and loads like a dream. Average velocity using RWS Hobby pellets was 809 fps, and using H&N match pellets it can group into a shirt button at 20 yards! I now have about $160 invested in the gun and am planning on keeping it. Sometimes an occasional visit to the pawn shop is well worth it.

Pawn bargain

A few years back I found a Marksman 72 (made by German HW, very much like an R9) in mint condition in a Houston pawnshop. $49. Scorched my jeans getting to my billfold. The girl waiting on me said, Uh, you know this is just a pellet gun, right? I said, yeah, I know......
