Would not consider it a collectible piece. Since the barrel has been changed and the trigger changed out plus custom stock work it isn't a collectors piece. So, from that standpoint it is worth whatever you would be willing to pay for it. I would not pay what the seller has in it, after all it is a used custom gun that was made for someone else. maybe $1K......JMHO

Value largely depends on how well it shoots.

I agree with USMC69 that it is no longer a collector, so comparative prices of same won't mean much. If I were to be interested in buying it, I would need to shoot it. Good match ammo on a calm day. If it looked like it was capable of shooting all tens on an IR 50/50 target, plus a large number of "x" scores, it would be worth a lot. If it was only an average shooter, I guess I would pass it by. That answer might not be much help in establishing a value, but I suspect Buyers with cash will mostly think along the same lines.

I would think it would be worth 1200-1500 or at least I would be a player at that. It has some good after-market parts and put together by a very well known Smith. The U.S Property is not that collectable to begin with, I would value it more now, with the customizations. JMO

I have a Voelker built 40X that shoots very well when I find the right ammo and I would not take less than $1800

I have five rifles that with the right ammo have shot 200-20X, None cost me that kind of money.

I guess it depends on what your looking for. I have several that will shoot 200-20X that cost much less than that too. I think we are on the same page using peep sights and shooting a A23/5 target. Thats not exactly the same as shooting a IR 250-20X or a ARA 2400, but its an accomplishment none the less. 1500-2200 is about the market on a built 40X that has a pedigree.

What rifles cost, and when you bought them...

I have rifles that cost me a lot less. Of course, that was when gasoline was 25 cents a gallon. The rifles USMC69 speaks of would sell for a lot more than what he paid for them if he were to sell them today I will bet. Go to the thread on the 50 yard benchrest matches here on RFC and look up his posts. You will see the score and the rifles used. And he does not even use expensive match ammo. Nor wind flags. As to IR 50/50, I absolutely agree having shot that game for a while. I suspect the Remington 40x, stock bedded by Volker with a Shilen barrel and a Jewell trigger will shoot right up there with the best of the rifles, with good match ammo, wind flags etc.

Yup,There's a big difference when we shoot at a ARA target you get the worst edge score. In IR 50/50 you get the best edge score and your X count is based on your round actually touching the X mark vs simply hitting the ring the X has around it.That's a lot of ground to cover I haven't shot the A23/5 since H.S. but it was a far easier target than either the ARA or IR 50/50 by a long shot, not saying it isn't tough with good or less than stellar conditions. I would love to see A.J. shoot one of our targets with peeps.I hear he's a really great shot ,but we score a much, much tighter ring and X count is far different. That's the reason our rifles have been made as accurate as possible and we use the best ammo available, just sayin

Need a bull big enough to center in a peep.

You need a bull big enough to center in a peep. Not a question in my mind about that. I have a few "bragging" groups pinned up on the wall. Smallest 5 shot group was 0.10" and a few others between that and 0.20", with iron sights and aging eyes.
There really is no meaningful comparison between shooting irons and shooting scopes. What both disciplines have in common is that on the shooter's best day, they are doing everything right, and, the equipment, ammo, weather are also right. It also helps to have the sun, moon and stars in the correct alignment.

Do you think that posting cards/targets would enhance the asking price? The parts list is impressive, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating or, in this case, the shooting. I recently bought a .222 benchrest rifle off of GB. It had been heavily modified for a particular shooter. But what convinced me was the 100-yard targets posted with the rifle. So: me? I'd pay more for a shooter of demonstrated capability.
