New magazines again?

Log in to see fewer ads
I was in my local Cabelas about a week ago and noticed another new version of the 597 22lg magazines, all black bodied. It said the new coating makes feeding easier and smoother. I havenít had those issues anyway but has anyone used them?

One review of the new coated steel mag said a magnet wouldn't stick to it. Most others say they work great.

That’s going to be handy potentially. I think I have 5 magazines for two 597’s but if they fail, which they shouldn’t, at leas5 these ones are better. I won’t have to rush around finding the last gen ones.

Perhaps it is a coated stainless steel? (and thus nonmagnetic)

Stainless steel usually has a high nickel content and nickel is not attracted to magnets.

The new magazines appear to be the same magnesium-aluminum alloy with the addition of the black coating. Should help keep the magazines cleaner and reduce the gritty feeling that develops after prolonged use.

IF, the coating holds up it should hopefully be an improvement keeping oxidation at bay when the mags' internals aren't cycled often enough and kept smooth by use.
Magnesium:
Pros- light weight and cheap
Cons- oxidation

I have my doubts the new mags are SS with a MSRP of $13.

You have one and used it? Opinions? How many stars would you give it with 5 being the highest and one being the pits.

Edit: I replied to the wrong thread, ooops.

Yes, I own several. I think they might be marginally better than the silver ones. They do seem to be a little easier to load to the 10 round capacity, and the black finish looks better. Work the same (well).

The only mag for the 597 that I would give a 10 on is the keep shooting mag, hands down the best,10 loaded rounds reliable every time,my old circle 10 mags I have worked into fair reliability with 8-9 rounds I would give an "8" the original old black plastic mags generally suck with more than 5 rounds loaded and rate a "2-3" and don't get used much! But I will look for the new black metal ones and give them a try,I always thought that it's a hell of a thing that a company markets a rifle without a working mag and almost twenty years later is still trying to make one that is truly good.A private company made one years ago while Remington was still trying to figure it out on their own rifle,AND years ago they stopped makeing a dead reliable ,shoot every time with nearly zero maintenance rifle ,the Nylon 66,( the tube mag version anyway)to bring out the "Viper" !!!?there are too many years in there to believe that one guy dropped the ball that many times,.
I 'm sorry there I go ranting again....I get that way ,sorry,Where may I obtain this black mag?
