Heart Shape in Barrel Code?

The first item in my barrel code is in the shape of a heart. The next three are: OD6. Does this indicate anything re date of manufacture?

Am I looking in the right place? The code shown above is just above the receiver. On the other side of the barrel is what looks like a misshapen 88. The receiver is stamped U.S. The SN is in the 37XX range.

My apologies if the question has been asked a thousand times before.

When there are four characters, you ignore the two ends. OD = July, 1957, which tracks with the serial number.

FWIW, there is a sticky on the parent forum which goes back to 2002.

'Heart shape' in bbl. code

driver69911 - to add a bit more to what edlmann mentions above, the 'heart shaped' proof mark is the Final Inspector Proof during that timeframe. If yours looks like the pic below:

It's perfectly clear to me now. Very appreciative of the advice, pic and link.

(The rifle is a little beat-up, but I love it as is.)

good inof

I was able to identify the Rem 40 I bought from the Univ South Dakota ROTC rifle team in 1960, for $75.00 . I shot a 231 with it today.
