The feature I really wanted in mine (Vortex; going one model up from their entry level) was the tripod attachment stud.

I'll admit....I bought a cheapie from Amazon. I got into precision long range shooting this year and I'd already invested quite a bit of money to get me started. So I went against my better judgement and went cheap. Turns out it works great and has more features than some units that are much more expensive. I've had no problem checking the range for the targets we shoot at past 300 yds. That's all I need. Yes it looks and feels like plastic. Yes I'd rather have something that's much nicer but for taking out of my match bag and confirming the distance on a couple targets before a match it works fine

Hard to beat a SIG for the money and how well they work. Son has an older model Kilo 2000 and it'll do farther than most people can shoot.
