1022 barrel makers missing the mark

I have a "rare" nitrided Fedderesen .920 that shoots pretty good in a 10/22 setup. I see and have had other aftermarket 10/22 barrels from several makers.

I never see any barrels made by folks who claim great 1022 accuracy making barrels being used by those who compete for the top of the year end list ARA Benchrest Unlimited.

Therefore wouldn't it be better to get a Muller or Shilen Ratchet blank and have it made for an "ultimate" 10/22 rather than buy a Feddersen, Kidd, GM, VQ, etc?

It's much easier when a top gunsmith can custom fit a single barrel exactly to a single receiver.

Much more difficult when you buy a pre-made manufactured product and bolt it on....

The accuracy of these bolt on barrels is ridiculously good for what they have to do...

Joe Chacon does that all the time over at https://autobenchrestassociation.com/.

I shoot a Joe Chacon built 10/22 benchrest rifle with a Douglas 4 groove barrel. While I am not a competitive shooter, the rifle shoots as well as my custom benchrest 40X. If the trigger were as nice as the Jewel I have in the 40X the Chacon rifle would probably shoot better.

I agree 100%, you put a .920" Shilen 24" long barrel with a tuner on it, and it will be competitive with about 90% of the custom bolt rifles that shot ARA matches.

The world of really really good .22lr barrels was recently exposed to me, as was the world of chasing lots of specific ammo that works best out of those barrels for specific games. This is a lesson I have learned too late in life. It got me to thinking about these aftermarket 10/22 barrels I had spent money on through the years from various makers known for aftermarket 10/22 barrels. Which makes me realize I was just making a plinker slightly better but still a plinker.

I could have spent money on one OEM barrel/bolt and sent it to CPC for all the good I did putting barrel manufacturer's kids through college buying this barrel or bolt or this or that stock and aftermarket trigger. If some younger person came up to me today and asked which 10/22 barrel and aftermarket would be a good buy the aforementioned is what I would tell them. Either that or tell them go buy an Anschutz, a tweaked 40X or Suhl 150 or go full custom. If their notion is just to shoot squirrels, cans, etc, anything off the rack will likely do.
