Well, shooting shot will certainly fill up your rifling with lead.
I'd recommend CCI CB LONGS. They won't cycle the action, but they are quiet, won't damage much, and you can cycle them manually. Another good alternative is a quality air rifle. Check PYRAMYD AIR for lots of choices with many customer reviews.

Nothing is quiet inside of a metal grain bin. I would want to test the CB long on something similar before punching a hole in the bin, same with a air rifle. Some "pellet guns" can do more damage than you think. Finally for using the "22 birdshot" I personally have never had a leading problem.

To my knowledge you will not get "rat shot" to cycle anything. Especially a charger. Savage makes a smooth bore and also Henry now.

Being an old farm boy myself them bins are fairly thick and don't think I want to be in there with a slug ricocheting off the walls I'm thinking Safety Glass's and bird shot is the way to go. Back when I was a kid we shot Rats and Pigeon's in the Barn with good results but I was using a single shot Rifle. Bird shot is really underestimated but with smooth bore you don't get the donut pattern like with a rifled barrel. I just think it would be more fun with a Charger/Red Dot
