Al,

Investing in ammunition is a tricky endeavor. It can pay off some times - look at the .17 Mach 2. At one point you could buy as much Eley as you could want at $2.50 per box. Now you could easily move all of it at $9.00 per box and not get badmouthed for scalping...

The problem with investing in .17 caliber ammo is the neck cracking issue, and right away there were examples of the Winchester 17 WSM cracking.

Ammo manufacturers have realized the problems of long-term storage of 17 caliber rimfire ammo, so getting warranty refunds on old 17 ammo is not so clear cut. I expect there to be some age limitations on that.

On .22lr, you would have been set. But in my mind, unless you have cases and cases of ammo, it's sort of a waste of time.

The problem with investing in 17 WSM ammo is the platform shortage - that is why I would not suggest doing it.

We won't be building a rifle for it.

Steve,
At 1 box per day limit and 8 boxes on the shelf with others buying it for the time being, it won't be an expensive endeavor. At my age with health issues long term storage isn't very long to those in good health or younger. Good point about them cracking and not storing that well.

I just picked up 8 boxes of the AE 17wsm 20gr, 2 boxs of winchester 20gr, and 1/2 box of winchester 25gr at academy for 15.99 a box. I haven't shot min yet so I hope it likes the AE.

A couple weeks ago I shot some 7-8 yr old 17HMR ammo, CCI and Hornady with no evidence of cracking before or after firing. I'm guessing good and bad lots perhaps?

Rare good timing by me. Per Hornady - ships this week and should hit shelves next week.

Hornady is on the shelf at Scheel's in Minot or ND. Had a ton of it. Running 15.99 or so.

A company that is true to their word. That is a new way of thinking.

5/16 still not showing up on ammo search sites anywhere.
