The checkering should be 12/inch. There was a Springfield 1903 buttplate with finer checking that runs about 20/inch. I believe it was used pre and post WW1.

Here a link to the different buttplates. The correct M2 will be as coarse as the fifth buttplate on the right, (NM), but will not have a trapdoor.

The correct buttplate for your M2 will not have a trapdoor. You are double lucky. The 1903NM buttplate sells for $200.00 or so. The correct buttplate for the M2 stock sells for about half that.

My early, unaltered M2 also has the "trapdoor" buttplate (nearly certain it's original to the stock due to fit, finish, etc.) and you really have to look to see that it is that variety because the joining lines are barely visible/

To the OP: you got yourself a nice rifle and I'll bet you'll be amazed at how well it will shoot, if you're familiar with aperture sights.

it is a trapdoor, fits well and looks to have been on a long time, I'm just going to leave it on, can't wait to shoot it, thanks for the compliment!
