MK III Target?

I have a MK III target 5 1/2" barrel. A buddy of mine has a MK III 22/45 he is wanting to sell, and it has a fluted 4 1/2" barrel. I can buy this complete gun cheaper than just a barrel assembly. My question is will the barrels interchange, one being a steel frame and the other a poly frame? Sorry if this has been hashed out before.

It's been a while since someone asked this question. Unlike the MKIV series, the swapping you're wanting to do requires some fitting. IIRC, MKIII 22/45 uppers are pinched down at the factory and are difficult to move to a standard frame. Conversely, standard uppers fit loose on 22/45 frames without doing some shimming.

Someone please correct me if I remember this backwards from what it is.

I've experimented with swapping uppers and lowers (not MK-IV's). A 22/45 upper will not fit on a standard frame without some altering. A standard upper will fit loosely on a 22/45 frame, but the 22/45 mainspring hook may or may not fit and lock the upper on. The hook on a 22/45 mainspring is about twice as thick as the one on a standard mainspring. That extra thickness usually prevents it from hooking over the barrel ledge where the bolt pin fits through. I've had some 22/45 mainsprings close on a standard upper, but they are a bear to open again and when they do, the upper literally falls off the 22/45 frame.

Thanks for the answers guy's, my MKIII has some ware on the high spots of the barrel. It has been a good shooter and still is. The 22/45 fluted barrel looks new and would look good on the MKIII target frame, just thought it would be an easy switch and give the ol gal a face lift. Thanks again!
