California law question

Log in to see fewer ads
This is for those who live in Cali and know the legalities of ammunition. Can a person send not, sell but send ammunition to a Cali resident from another state legally? If so are their any new laws I would need to be aware of to keep both parties free of any hassle. I'm looking to send some 22LR to a guy who lives in Cali but I not at all familiar with all their new laws. Please advise.
Thanks for your help.

I live here and I don't know for sure, but I am guessing that it would be illegal, otherwise we would have more generous out of state friends.

I'm about as far from Cali. as one can get and still be in the USA but I think all ammo and weaponos coming into Cali. have to go through a dealer/distributor. I know I see a lot of disclaimers about not being able to ship stuff to CA. I don't believe you are even legal to bring ammo into the state when you travel that you bought out of state.

You have to send it through a dealer like a firearm so they can get their goodness check from the government. Remember you have to mark ammo to ship it and the shipping company knows where it can go and where it can't go. Individuals traveling through by car can have ammo as it only applies to residents bringing in ammo and assumes the ammo travels through the state with the person just like if you brought your own gun to hunt here. Nobody is checking you for ammo at the border in or out to make sure you follow the law. The law like those against driving cigarettes over state lines to avoid local state taxes are all but impossible to enforce except at legal points of sale. The big + to the state is a "fee" collected every time someone buys ammo for the background check and the information collected about caliber and quantity from every purchase.

Thanks for the information guys. I was afraid the state had made the laws a complicated mess and it appears to be so. I wanted to send some ammo to a guy to use on his Youtube channel for evaluation. I'll explore other options of getting him what he needs. Thanks .

You have to use those inaccurate CCI coppers if you want to use a 22 for hunting. You can have and shoot all the lead ammo you like as long as the target doesn't bleed.. I'm sure plenty of butchers are still using lead to harvest beef animals.
