Squires Bingham Model 116 MK 1 - Under all that paint

I decided that I was going to refinish the stock on a Squires Bingham Model 116 MK1. It was scratched and dinged up pretty good. To me it appeared that the original paint finish was applied by dipping the stock in a 55 gallon barrel. It was a very heavy coat to say the least.

Let the sanding begin... Hey! There is some grain under there...

After some walnut stain and 5 coats of Tru-Oil...

I am quite happy with it. I may matt it out but the gloss is kind of nice. I may have to see what is hiding under the paint of the second stock. Hmm...

Now If I can only get this thing to stop eating firing pins for lunch. It shoots groups smaller than a golf ball at 50 yards with Remington Golden Bullets (mid 1990's production). A new production firing pin looks like they addressed the issue by adding a radius where there was an inside sharp corner. I have yet to install it.

Happy 4th!

Thanks for the info. Could be the next one on my list. Do you think all have good wood under the paint?

I have no idea. Is it possible?... sure. Is it likely?. . . I don't think so.

I do recall a post, possibly from another site, saying that it was possible to order an oiled stock. However, this was discontinued in the first year or two.
