I think I've come up with a useful scenario...maybe.

50 shots at 200 yards, rimfire, whatever setup makes you happy.
22lr, 17 hmr, 22wmr, 17hm2, 17wsm, all brands, all types.
Full benchrest setup, bipod, bags, or one-piece test rest, it doesn't matter.
Grab a chunk of cardboard, about 14 inches by 24 inches,
set an Aimpoint at the top/center, and dial y'er scope up
so the POI is about 10 inches down from the Aimpoint. (5 MOA).

Post a picture of the results with a 12-inch ruler alongside the 50-shot group for reference.

Include a pic of the setup, the box of ammo used, and if you have a chronograph,
the high, low, and average muzzle velocities of the 50 shots.

To avoid having to hunt the entire thread,
in order to find the results with a specific brand of ammunition,
the links below are in alphabetical order by brand name and type.

Example: Brand and type of ammo Link to post

### indicates the best results so far

You can calculate what the results will be at lesser distances by applying the half-third rule.
Half the distance produces a third of the spread.
At 200 yards the 50-shot group measures 9 inches of spread.
At 100 yards expect 3 inches of spread, at 50 yards you'd get 1 inch of spread.
And at 25 yards expect 1/3 inch of spread for 50 shots.
Useful if you are looking to compare the results for accuracy at lesser distances.

For comparison to results at 100 yards, see the 50 at 100 thread.

To review results produced at 100 yards in a testing tunnel see the 25 at 100 thread.

Vertical spread is the reason doubs.
I do almost all my range shooting at 200 yards.
1 fps difference in mv is 1/10th inch of vertical spread with standard velocity 22lr.
I can destroy the aimpoint if I zero there. A substantial number of rounds will hit tight
but the strays caused by mv differences spread vertically quite a bit.
Add a tailwind, or turbulence, the vertical for 50 shots can be 14 inches top to bottom.
With the aimpoint above the group it's there for all 50 shots.
Put it at the zero point and there's a good chance it'll disappear halfway through the run.

Here's a starter to give an idea of what we're looking for

CCI SV 50 shots
High 1103 fps
Avg 1066 fps
Low 1018 fps

CZ 455 Varmint, set trigger, Lilja barrel, bipod and bags, Mueller 8-32x44

and the results at 200 yards
Wind at 4 to 8 mph swinging from my 7 to my 4
about 8.3 inches of vertical spread

Thanks for explaining. When I have the chance, I'll try it both ways.

Looks like your POA would have been safe from being "shot out" at any place on that target jaia. But, I guess that you've got a point if it's the shooter that posts frequently about shooting at metal eggs at 200 yards and hitting something like 50 out of 50. Maybe he'll try this game and show us how it's done.

Later,
Johnny

I think I will need to try this sometime...

I think I will need to try this sometime. I do know I will not be able to see the point of aim with iron sights at 200 yards. I had tried the egg shoot game with iron sights at 100 yards, and could not make them out without a contrasting background. What I might do is to put up a military target, take my shots, then draw in the 14" x 24" rectangle taking in as many of the shots as possible. At least that might be a start for me. For those doing this with open iron sights, probably the way to start. I will be using a rifle I shoot the 50 yard benchrest iron sight matches with. The ranges I shoot the wind is strong and I expect the target will show that to be the case.

Have told David, we can try this if he wants. I will be shooting a 52D with MK 8 Internationals. Probably will be eating a lot of crow.

I had another thought to add...

To get a partial answer to the sometimes debate about comparative accuracy between the .22 Long Rifle and the .22 Magnum or .17 HMR, have two targets side by side and take alternate shots at each. This will insure as identical conditions as possible and the results will be instructive. Absent a windless day, I will predict the .17 HMR will produce the tightest groups, followed by match grade .22 Long Rifle.

Johnny, with my luck, after getting all set up, making the hike down and back to set the target
scope set, chronograph up and running, my very first shot would punch the sight dot
or knock it loose/off. Then I'd have to wander down and put up another sight dot.
That'd get annoying real fast.

Currently I'm using Avery day-glo adhesive dots to aim at.
Bright color means it's easy to see, even in mirage.

I do know I will not be able to see the point of aim with iron sights at 200 yards.

Dave, use a standard 14" diameter target mounted high on the frame.
With a 100 yard zero a typical standard velocity 22lr will impact
about 46 inches to 54 inches below point of aim at 200 yards.
With the 14" diameter target up high and the center of cardboard 48 inches below
there'll be no need to change your sights. Same with a scope set for a 100 yard zero.
And, the sighting target will never be hit and can be reused for years. :D

I did this in the past before installing a 25 moa rail on the 455.

Aimpoint is at the top of the frame, targets at poi 46 to 52 inches below.

I'll probably do just that with my Marlin 60.
We'll be able to see how my squirrel rifle does at 200 yards without messing with the optics.

#18 · (Edited)
Here's a quick 10 shot group at my 16" gong set at 220 yards. The wind is howling at about 20mph over my left shoulder. First shot blew about 6" to the right at 3 o'clock. Held left and shot the 7 round group, which measured 6.5".

Shot the last 2 off hand, which landed at 12 and 2 o'clock.

Gun is a Winchester 9422 with iron peep sights. Geco rifle ammo.

Same setup

Large circular pattern is caused by bullet seating.
ES is only 100 fps, not enough to create that much vertical.
100 fps would produce about 3 inches.
Seating depths varied and roll a cartridge on a flat surface
the bullet tips had a visible wobble about the axis of rotation.
Not a surprise to see such a large pattern from poor bullet alignment.

#22 ·
jala- I appreciate your posts showing lack of consistency with ammo mfg. processes. Variations surely show up at the longer distances. It'd be interesting to see how groups with the same ammo would fare in a 200 yard enclosed tunnel where wind, mirage, etc. could be eliminated. Another thing I'm going to gather from your testing: if I miss, it may not be me after all. :)

#23 · (Edited)
It's easy to tell when it's me.
Just look though the scope and it's dancing around the bullseye.
If I have a bad case of the yips I put the rifle away and head to the pistol range.
This morning I was relaxed and steady.
With the Sinclair and the heavy stock rig, no problem maintaining sight picture.
Early morning and mirage hadn't had a chance to set in.
No one using the rifle ranges at the local club. No big bangs to startle me.
The bright green sticker shows up clearly at 32x.
Center the crosshair, relax, squeeze, watch the hole appear.

#25 · (Edited)
By dialing your crosshairs up, you can use a lower power scope.
Mount a large diameter target to aim at and you have an aimpoint to work with.
Bullets will impact below the large target that a low power scope can easily center on.
The only excuse not to attempt 100 yard plus rimfire is lack of shooting distance.
Some ranges only offer a maximum of 100 yards.

Big target up high, it's what I'll have to do with my Marlin 60.

#27 · (Edited)
Wind kicked my adze this morning.
200 yards, Lapua Polar Biathlon 22lr
CZ 455 Varmint, Lilja sporter barrel, Mueller 8-32x44
Heavy bags, chrony out front, 84 degrees F, no mirage due to wind

Conditions and muzzle velocities

36 fps ES explains the 4 inches of vertical, 8 inches of horizontal was wind.

Could not time a shot to save my life.
Some spots no wind showing, other spots grass leaning over.
Direction depended on which swirl was traveling across the range.
Like to drive me nuts...it was so much fun. :D

#28 ·
These pics are certainly showing why/how Ive missed the properly scaled for 200yd. ram silhouettes off cross sticks.....you would think they would be gimme’s.
That range is in a cut between two bluffs and the wind is usually every which way.
Last shoot I got 8 of 10 and felt pretty good about it, best Ive done in a few years.
