Could a Custom Shop convert a CMR-30 to 17 WSM

I think a PMR-30 with a CMR-30 both chambered in a 17 WSM would be the ultimate.

Great for target, hunting small game, and self defense. Inexpensive ammo.

Would it be safe to have a custom gun like this made? Could someone do it?

Doubtful. While the PMR/CMR isn't a straight blowback action, there are two factors which make conversion from 22 Mag to 17WSM a problem.

The first is the caliber reduction. In a 22 Mag the bore more or less the same diameter as the cartridge case. This means that the pressure drops fairly quickly since the gasses have lots of room to expand per inch of barrel.

With a 17 caliber bore there is far less bore volume, so pressures remain high, sometimes forcing the breech open before the bullet has exited the barrel. This is why the first generation of semiauto 17HMR rifles had so many problems.

Secondly, the 17 WSM runs at much higher pressure than the 22 Mag. This makes the above problem even worse and also requires a stronger action than is commonly used for 22 Mags.

Making an inexpensive bolt action in 17 WSM is a challenge. Making a semiauto rifle in 17 WSM is a real challenge. Making a 17 WSM semiauto that will fit into a pistol sized package would be nearly impossible.

There's a lot more too it than just fitting a new barrel.

That's a bummer. I don't claim to be an expert, but here is my logic...

I'm a big fan of the KIS (Keep It Simple) Principle, Having ammo that is interchangeable between your rifle and your pistol is simple. Under normal circumstances this might be unnecessary, but during an emergency (i.e. home defense, apocalyptic scenario, etc) it might not be you shooting the gun (friend, family) it is easier to stock ammo of one type, guns jam, a weapon maybe inaccessible, there are a number of things that can go wrong. There is a reason during war everyone doesn't have their own gun in their own caliber, and why those that the military supplies with a P90 SMG also get a FNH 57 hangun that uses the same ammo.

Interchangeable magazines make it even more simple.

There are probably a lot of options that fill these criteria in 9mm, but outside of home defense I don't have a lot of use for a 9mm. Its not very expensive to shoot, so it would be good for target shooting out to 75-100yds. But I can't use it to hunt deer or varmints.

Having something that would fit the above criteria and be able to hunt deer with would be unpractical. Too much recoil for a semi-auto pistol. Maybe in a giant revolver, but that wouldn't be great for home defense then.

So that leaves varmints. So flat shooting, accurate, .17 to 6mm. The options I have found are;

PMR-30 / CMR-30 (22 Magnum)
FNH FiveSeven / MPA 5700SST (5.7x28mm)
Armscor 22 TCM Pistol/ M22 Rifle (22 TCM)

Does anyone have an opinion about any of these?
Does anyone agree that a 17 WSM platform would be better than all of these? (Cheaper ammo, more accurate ammo, more energy, quieter, less recoil, flatter shooting...)

It's been 6 years... Three new semi-autos in 17 WSM. Are my dreams of a Mac Style carbine in 17 WSM just as bleak as they were 6 years ago?

I think so. The idea of a "MAC style " 17wsm is really cool. Like an MP7 with ammo we can afford. Unfortunately I think the technological hurdles are daunting. The shape of the round would make stacking them in a grip difficult. While there are a few good semi autos on the market, getting a compact, mag through the grip may be more than is practical.

I do love the idea, but I bet we see a semi auto MP7 in 4.6 or 5.7 before we see one in 17wsm )or 17hmr for that matter)
