What is the correct front peep sight for a 52b heavy barrel target model. Thanks.

It would depend which 52B heavy barrel you purchased. As an example if you look on page 172-173 of the Houze book (hardcover) you will note that 52B heavy barrel rifles came with a variety of sight combinations:

- 5221 - Olympic front and rear sights
- 5225 - Lyman 77 front sight, no rear sight
- 5234 - Lyman 17G front sight and Lyman 525 rear sight
- 5235 - Redfield 63 front sight, no rear sight
- 5245 - No front or rear sight
- 5255 - No front or rear sight
- 5256 - Lyman 77H, Lyman 525 rear sight
- 5264 - Vaver 36F front sight, Vaver 35 Mielt Extension rear sight
- 5265 - No front or rear sight
- 5274 - Lyman 77 front sight, Marble Goss Extension rear sight
- 5284 - Lyman 77 front sight, Lyman 525 rear sight
- 5294 - Vaver W1 AT front sight, Vaver R5237 extension rear sight

Unfortunately on page 171 Appendix 4 (Sales of Model 52 Rifles) covers the period 1953 - 1980 so we will really know how many of the above catalog designations were sold during the 52B production run. Some of these weren't around very long while others were kept and continued to be used when the 52C was introduced.

There were plenty of aftermarket sights available after the war (Redfield, Lyman, Vaver, Griffen & Howe, Womack, Freeland, and others so unless the rifle's lineage can be traced to when it was purchased it may be hard to determine what sights are correct. I happen to have my Fathers 52B (model 5256) and I have the original sights that came with the rifle. I also have a 52B which was given to me and it came with a Lyman 77 front sight and a Lyman 52F rear sight which is interesting as I believe it was a 1/5" MOA sight.

Hope this helps

Bill

All true, but the M17G was standard on all M52 heavy bbl;s. from around 1930. It was improved from a 3/4" to an inch, and in 1936 the insert retainer was made larger. I have 3 M52's with M17G front sights. All 3 are different and all are original. All 3 take the same inserts as the M17. Big Larry

Larry,

Aren't your 52 heavy barrels pre-A models? Also I thought you sold off your 52 collection to fund other interests.

Early 30's Speedlocks thru the "A" model. I sold off all my standard weight bbl. M52's except for my Slowlocks. Also my M52-B heavy and BULLGUN. I still have a 1940 heavy B, and a 1955 C BULLGUN. Got into S&W's after I completed my Winchester 22 rifle collection. Right now, I am restoring a 1926 M52 with a stainless bbl. 98% of the Japanned finish remains. No plans to continue with M52's. I have all the 22 models, so I am just buying what I like. Big Larry

What models had the Winchester #77 Front sight on them?

I have 3 of them, and want to know which models they came on so I can post that info correctly. Thanks in advance!
