Something Better

Hi mrt949: For about the same money spent, you can get a great starter package that will give you very good results. The Caldwell BR is probably the best deal, and a great place to start... and includes adjustment for wind. Optional size front rest bags are available for both front rest as well.

got one

I wouldn't use it to replace my dedicated benchrest set up but as a varmint top it's great. I like it better than the bull bag for rimfire.

I got the second link from this post - Rock rest and bag. Good deal for a starter kit. I recommend it for the value. Better ones out there but this meets my needs.

I am not a competitive bench rest shooter, but do quite a bit of shooting off the bench for sighting in optics, performing a lot of ammo testing to determine what shoots best in each of my rifles & pistols, reload testing, and target shooting for a score in my own, timed competitions. I personally would not use a rest that "clamps" the firearm down as I prefer the rifle to slide rearward on both the front rest and rear bag.

I started with the Caldwell Rock front rest with a Protektor Owl Ear front rest bag along with a Protektor Bunny Ear Rear Shooting Rest Bag with a Heavy Bottom rear bag. That setup served me well but I always wished I would have gone with the Caldwell Rock BR Competition model. I'm not impressed with the Caldwell front or rear bags but obviously are better than nothing.

Earlier this year I stumbled upon a Sinclair Benchrest RH Windage Heavy Varmint Rest "deal" and fully expect it to provide a very stable and easy adjustable platform . . . but have not yet had it to the range. Check with your local ranges as once in a while you can find someone getting rid of their equipment.

My Caldwell Rock front rest is now relegated to my work area for use on initial optics bore sighting and work with my Mantis X dryfire training system, or trips to an indoor range when I don't want to take the expanded setup with me.

Front rests and rear bags offer a lot of flexibility.

Great Rest

I have been using one for the past year. It works great if your shooting a AR style rifle. Having said that I just purchased a new CZ and am changing to a front rest that better fits that type of gun. Watch eBay, I only paid 75.00 for mine new in the box.
