Dude brought it to me with the bolt jammed 1/2 way open/closed

I bent the trigger guard tab down so the carrier can now pivot and the bolt closes

yet, now, the carrier drags and won't lift ammo up, to be chambered.

have cleaned/degunked the works

That "tab" is the lifter stop. Did you bend it back to where is was when you started?

the tab had been bent up to the receiver when I got it, so I bent it down bout 45* to allow carrier to pivot
Have I gone too far?
Is 20-30* needed for proper feeding?
thanx

Should look like this.

Bolt closed.

Bolt open.

Lifter extension with bolt open.

when a round of ammo tries to feed the lifter won't push it up for the bolt to engage and push into chamber.
WITHOUT AMMO the lifter pivots freely.......up and back..........until you add ammo.

I do have a couple things I not sure of, you don't say if the bolt can be pulled all the was back with the lifter still not rising? If that's the case something got damaged when the bolt got jammed half open, the bolt should be stopped about .25" short of full open if the lifter doesn't rise. There is a tab on the rear of the lifter that the bolt catches to swing it up, that might have gotten damaged. Without ammo the lifter spring will make it rise, with ammo the cartridge guide spring will catch the cartridge and counter act that holding the lifter down until the bolt catches the tab.

Also make sure the bolt from a clip in magazine fed gun hasn't been swapped in, I don't think they have the grooves needed to work a lifter..

the lifter pivots up fine when no ammo is in tube and bolt pulled all the way back
BUT will not pivot up to feed ammo

plus, it looks like my tab is a touch lower than yours

I completely understand that, like I explained, the spring will make the lifter pivot up with out ammo - but the spring is not what makes it lift with a cartridge in it. With ammo it is held down against that springs pressure by another spring that contacts the top of the cartridge (the 'cartridge guide spring' as explained above) and the bolt catching the upper prong on the lifter makes it overcome that spring and physically forces the lifter up, the lifter spring then keeps it up until the bolt moves forward enough to push it back down.

I asked about the bolt movement when the lifter does not lift a cartridge, the bolt should not be able to be pulled fully open if the lifter does not rise, it should stopped about .25" short of full open when it contacts the upper tab on the lifter. If your tab looks shorter, the bolt might be slipping over it and not forcing the lifter up. Make sure you have the bolt for a tube fed rifle.
