Found this 416 at a gun show today. Maybe some of you saw this as well? No, I did not buy it, but out of curiosity I thought I'd ask what you guys think of wood carvings like this on gun stocks. I know it kills any collecting value, but on a gun with limited collector interest I could warm up to it. Somebody put a lot of work into it and it sure as heck is better than I could do!

For me it depends on the subject matter, and the quality of the execution. In this case it appears to be very well done in both respects and I like it.

That looks unique and actually well done. I certainly would have bought it if the price was good. I have been watching for the Stevens 416 for awhile.

Asking price was $525. It had 2 holes drilled for a weaver side mount which always turns me off so I didn't ask about bottom line price. The checkering was done well which attracted me to it in the first place.

Parker Hale sight? You got me there, I never heard of that. Is it more desirable than a Lyman or Redfield? Yet another thing I need to learn.

The rear sights are cheaper than they should be because there are a lot of them out there.

I'm not a fan of carvings on a stock, BUT that one is very nicely done. I would buy that gun if it was priced right!

In my first reply to this post I noted that I had never seen a 416 Sporter. So, I will ask the question has anyone else ever seen one? They must be rare because I used to watch for the 416"s on GB and never saw a sporter.

It's not a Sporter, it's a standard 416 that has been customized, it still had the factory front & rear sights that came standard on a 416, the heavy target barrel and the stock is the original with embellishments.

I wish I would have taken more pics. If memory serves, it did have a beavertail forend with a target rail which I'm guessing would mean it was the normal stock that has been altered to look like a sporter. I don't know much at all about the 416's, just what I've been reading since seeing it at the show, so don't know if a sporter stock was ever offered. I should have bought the dang thing. Strictly for educational purposes, of course.

FWIW here is a photo of my example of this rifle in basically it's stock form without the custom checkering, carving and it still has it's original muddy dark walnut stock finish:

'Carving'?

Don't know what the Original owner of this rifle was thinking by carving a rabbit in the stock,.. even though nicely done,... The '416' Stevens rifle is and was considered a target Gun,...both the Civilian and Commercial models!,...[IMO]To Heavy a Rifle for Squirrel or rabbit hunting
