How do you find a knife builder? And commission a build?

New to custom knives and not sure how the process works. Only interaction I have had so far is: I purchased a nice custom knife from Harry King about 10years ago.

I am looking to buy a nice fighting knife and have found 2 very similar examples. Both are made by Walter Brend. An original will cost about $2500.
So I am looking for a knife builder to make a clone.
Does this sound reasonable?
What kind of prices should I expect?
How do I find a builder?

Thanks!

Dan Thornberg is a member here and makes beautiful custom knives. I have no idea if he accepts commission work but you could email him and ask. http://www.dtknives.com/

Good luck!

Duplicating a Brend fighter will not be easy or inexpensive. A lot of makers won't "clone" another maker's work without permission. I suggest you join over at BladeForums and look through the "knifemaker for sale" area to see if someone there might interest you. I've had original Brends and am pretty knowledgeable about makers, I think Bobby Branton might be a good starting place.

There are companies that sell blanks to make your own. Lots of different designs, metals and stages of completion. There are many out there. Search knife blanks for sale.

You can also search for Custom Knife Makers. There are a lot of them and reviews are out there.

Take a look at this makers knives. Not Brend but a very nice style all his own. Top quality and a nice guy. I have a hunter size knife made by David.

Contact him and maybe he will make a custom order like the Brend you want.
