Never heard of a 540-XT. I'm familiar with the 540-X & 540-XR. There was a little over 6300 540-X and a little over 5000 540-XRs produced. Not very many compared to other models.

Thanks, I knew not many XRís were made but didnít realize it was such a small number. Makes me appreciate mine that much more.

540X

540X straight forend
540 XR Angled forend to bottom front of trigger guard
540 XRJR same as 540 XR except stock shorter at butt for junior shooters.

I have one XR and one XRJR

I suspect 540 XT is reference to it being a target rifle.

540XT or 540XR

Post us a pic of them. I have two 540XR's and they are single shot match tgt rifles with peeps and slab sided wood stocks similar to the Anschutz of the 1970's. Pics posted below of both 540XR's. 1st is topped with 36x Sightron and Ezel tuner and the 2nd is all original with the peeps and nicer wood IMO. I included some example 50y 5shot groups all recorded with the scoped rifle except for the last group on the NRA bull was shot with the peep sights at 50y. It shows the difference in accuracy between a tricked out, scoped rifle with tuner compared to the iron peeps is not a big difference. Main thing is that with peeps you cannot score as you go and if you do not have a standard bull and the right insert you will be less able to shoot so well.

I have seen the 540X which is also single shot with a stock more suited for positional shooting. They made a 541T which is a sporter repeater hunting rifle using a 5rd box mag. Some of these had the HB. They also made a 541X which was a repeater with peeps on it. It looked like a military trainer rifle. As far as I know, all of these had the HB.

Never seen a 540XT. Might be a oddball. Is yours a single shot or repeater? What kind of sights is on it?

Love to see the photos. The 54X series rifles are very good shooters. Not as costly or heavy as the 40X Rem, they are nonetheless close in their accuracy potential which is mostly why Remington stopped their production. They were conceived as a lower cost budget target rifle but turned out so well that they were eating into the sales of the flagship 40x model. Same thing happened at the same time with the 788 Rem center fire rifle. It ate into 700 series sales so they killed it. A case of well intentioned market differentiation going sideways.

JG26_Irish I will get photos when i get a chance .The xr looks just like yours .The 540 X is as you guys suspected not an XT even though they wrote it up that way because it had the word TARGET after the X . One had a Palma rear and the other an Olympic .Both rear sights had the Gehman adjustable eye pieces to open and close the ocular hole .Scoped the barrels after light cleaning and they look real good ,not even a carbon ring in either one . Now if they just had iron sight matches near by ,im all set . BTW what ammo did you shoot the groups with ?

My LGS came into 22 540XR's recently. They belong to a local club, and while they have plenty of handling marks, none of them have been abused or neglected, with extremely nice looking bores. The club wants 15 of them refinished and returned, leaving 7 for the LGS to resale. I'm 1st on the list for one of the resale rifles. They all have Lyman #15 front sight globes, and Williams micrometer rear sights.

My previous experience with target rifles has been with my CZ's. I've set-up a 452 with BRNO diopter sights and have been really happy with the results. I'm hoping that the 540 will meet or exceed what my CZ has been capable of.

Once I take possession of the rifle I'll return to this thread and post it up.

Arnie, The three groups that I posted in January were all 5 shots at 50y from a bench and sandbags fired outdoors with Lapua Center-X ammo. I have found both of these rifles to not be too picky about ammo. They shoot most quality ammo well. I have recorded similar groups with the scoped rifle using older lots of Wolf Match Extra, SK Std+ and Eley Black. The rifle with the peeps has not been shot much at all and looks & feels it. The scoped 540XR was well worn and fitted with peeps when I got it. I can tell that the barrel is showing some wear. It is very cold natured and takes 10rds or more to warm up and settle down before it really shoots its best. Even with all the wear and tear, I was able to record two perfect scores of 250pts for 25 shots with X counts of 11 and 10 respectively in a local benchrest match this past summer in Somerset, KY. That was good enough for 3rd place in the factory rifle class (I had removed the tuner). A friend from our club won that match using an Anschutz 64 MPR with a 250/14x score. My 540 with peeps is slightly more accurate than my Winchester model 75 also fitted with factory peeps. These old budget Remingtons are not a pretty as an old Annie or Winchester but they are really good shooters for a lower cost rifle. I am planning to shoot the scoped 540XR in some ARA Factory Rifle Class matches this summer. It qualifies for this class where the Annies and the Win 52's and 75's are specifically barred from that class. It should be a competitive rifle with the CZ's, Tikka's and other sub $1000 new factory rifles.
