Too windy for rifles.....(Plan "B")

I wanted so badly to shoot my CZ's today, get a target or two submitted to Joe Hailer for the 50 yard iron sight bench rest match, and maybe one or two CAC targets to add to the collection......

It's a beautiful day here on the mid-Atlantic coast, it's 66, and sunny, but the wind is howling.....20 to 25 mph with gusts up to 30 mph doesn't make for good rimfire rifle shooting.

Well this is the first decent range day I've had in well over two months, and I was determined to not let it go to waste, so I packed up a couple of pistols, and hit the pistol range instead.

Hit the steel plate rack with my Target Match Kimber, and showed FallRun how it done.....

Then broke out the Single Six, and had some rimfire pistola fun. It wasn't easy keeping a steady hand in all that breeze, and it got so bad we couldn't keep the target backers in the stand.....then the stands started blowing over.....

But I had fun all the same, and I did get to smell a little gunpowder for the first time in 10 weeks.......

I even wore the fancy new Cowboy holster I got for this old Ruger......

Good for you Tony.

It was warm enough here today and I could have shot, but I wanted to test some CB stuff including the "new" Remington CBees and/or try for the 13mm with my 452FS, but I didn't think it would work out well with the 10mph breeze. The wind was fairly steady, el Nino~ I guess or the Low Pressure area approaching, and I might have done alright, but just couldn't get motivated.

Not a leaf is stirring. Must have been dead calm!!!

Nice Shooting Clem.

Actually, maybe Ms. Chatterbox shot that target. That doesn't look like you in the photo.

What Tony failed to mention was that the 2 targets he posted were shot from about 6' away

Clem:

I know it was windy. It's always windy in Texas anywhere from Tyler west.

Fallrun:

I figure Tony's targets were a touch more than 6' away.

Good for you folks for shooting.

Clem, Ms Chatterbox:

I see you folks were shooting in the "boundary layer" to minimize the effects of the wind. Good tactic! Did you try to shoot with the wind, against the wind or cross wind? Was the wind coming from the tree line or blowing toward it?

thats a target that was setup for centerfire. if we got closer into the field we woulda been up to our nose in cow pies. my guestimation on the wind was a 5mph, 1/4 to 1/2 value from about 4:30-5 o'clock. enough to blow a .22 around past 100y, i shot 2 or 3 groups at that distance to get my rough zero with the wind and elevation, my guestimate off my 50y zero wasnt far off. i didnt zero it perfectly, but it was close enough for government work i think

Blabber Mouth......I went through a lot of trouble getting the powder burns cleaned off those two targets so they looked like I shot them at a respectible distance......

Jeebus Clem, 5 mph isn't wind, that's considered breathing air around these parts. If it was only blowing 5, I would have been on the rifle range shooting @ 50 yards with iron sights.....

I got next sunday off again, but the long range forcast isn't looking all that promising right now, of course that'll change 20 times before next Sunday gets here.......
