Model 38 Buttstock

Hello, new to the marlin slide action and hoping someone can help, Ive committed to purchase a 38 and the seller says the rifle is original but the rifle has a crescent buttstock. I have done a little looking and even referenced Brophys book and it makes no mention of a crescent buttstock. The seller says the stock is serial numbered to the rifle. Any input greatly appreciated.

It might be possible, but I would have to question it. It's hard to tell in the one picture you posted but it looks like the wood might not fit the receiver & tangs very well, but I can't blow the picture up to see it better and there is a shadow over that area. As to it being serial numbered to the gun, number stamps are readily available, I would have to compare the stamping to another gun to see if the size & spacing looked consistent. Does the wear on the stock seem to match that of the receiver & forearm?

.

Yes it is - Thanks.

A few days ago, I sold it locally for more than I was asking in the classifieds here - and nobody had to pay for shipping or FFL fees.

Just in case the new owner shows up...

Brophy left out that the first and some of the second year of the Model 38 got the crescent stock. Later ones got the more modern standard rear 39 stock. Probably to lower costs. And occasionally, throughout the run, when they'd find an old crescent stock in a box under/behind a desk, it'd get stamped and shipped out as well...Marlin was not as careful back in the old days worrying about specifics on non-expensive guns..if it worked, it went!

Bottom line, NEVER be surprised by anything Marlin did prior to 1986.
Weird stuff happened.
Remember that folks could drink ON the job and it was considered normal until the 1980's
