I like those nylon/plastic jobs. They look to be the ticket.

Just stuff around the house, I've used oak, sheet lead, and sole leather. Oak and other woods are prone to splitting. Leather is my favorite, especially for the large faced woodworking vises.

I would caution against that if you need a strong grip. Would work fine for a light grip on (for example) a stock, but stryo will disintegrate under significant pressure and damage to the surface of the part would be likely. It's perfect for cushioning stuff in shipping but has virtually no compressive strength under significant load.

Duct tape works to a degree because the fibers and polymers used are pretty tough in compression, but I would personally never use it on something I cared about, like a slide or frame for a pistol, IF I needed it to be held securely. If I just wanted it held lightly for, say, disassembly, then perhaps.

I have a variety of aluminum and plastic jaws with magnets and flat or V-grooved, and semi-circular grooved faces. Some of the aluminum ones have rubber liners. When I'm using any potentially damaging amount of force I sprinkle powdered rosin from Amazon on everything and use protective lead sheets from Brownells between the jaws and the part.

Most of us older guys make them out of sheet brass, even sheet copper. it is too bad, I image there is no longer any shop class in high school.

Never throw away a leather belt. I made bench vice covers from aluminum angle purchased from Lowe’s-Home Depot. Leave one pair plain and glue leather strips from a old belt on another pair.
