TX22 10-16 rd mag conversion

When I ordered my TX22 from Sportsmans Warehouse recently all they had in stock were the 10 rnd mag versions. I don't live in ban state but I'd been looking for a TX for awhile so I jumped.

16 round mags were out of stock initially but I eventually found them in stock on the Taurus website store.

In the mean time I looked into converting my 10 rounders to 16 rounder.

There were two things preventing the conversion. One was the slots in the side of the mags so the follower doesn't go all the way to the bottom like it does on the 16s.

In addition there is a 1 5/8" long follower plug in the 10 rounder preventing the follower going all the way to the bottom.

After trying to cut slots in one of my 10 rounders I then figured out that simply cutting the plug down and removing the follower pin would allow the follower to go all the way down. I first cut an inch off and it held 14. I then went back and another 1/4" off the plug to get to a full 16. The pin apparently only is there to help load the mags.

I loaded up the mag and tested it on my bullet trap. I ran two mags through my TX no issues. Not an extensive test but at least proof of concept.

You can still use a long narrow object through the follower hole to help in loading the first 10 rounds, then you have to load by hand.

Bottom line...
With the plug cut and the pin removed you have a stealthy 16 rounder. With the plug cut down and the pin in you have a 10 rounder that can be converted to a 16 simply by removing the follower pin. Note: You do have to disassemble the mag to remove the pin

I've left the follower pins out when I disassembled the mags for cleaning. I think the followers slide a bit more freely. I use the Lightning Loader and don't need the pins. Highly recommended.

I don't mean to butt into your post, but I have a chance to get a Taurus TX22 with 10rd mags, by reading through this post and looking at the photos
I think that without any alteration the 16 rd mags will work in the TX 22 available to me. Am I correct?

Yes both the 10 and 16 round mags work in any TX22

Although my TX22 came with 16-rounders, your post is very interesting.

The majority of problems people have with these mags not feeding correctly is because of loading the mags by using the button to pull the follower down. If you pull it too far down the rounds can rim lock. The best thing you can do is take the buttons out. And leave them out

Just saw this post, bit of a post resurrection here. So, if I take my 10 rd. mags and make them 16 can I then use the TANDEMKROSS 5 round extension and make my mags 21 rds.??

No need to do anything but the Tandemkross +5 extension on either the 10rd or 16rd mags, it takes either one to 21rds.
