Three Barrels?

If I hadn't already had everything to load for a .357, the 44 would have been my choice for a pistol caliber too. Great round.

Lets be realistic! If you got into contenders in the late 80's into the 90's, it was possible to go to a gun show and find barrels for $75 and frames for $135.
compared to today's prices It was a very sound investment.

In the last couple years your lucky to see a single contender at a gun show table unless it has a couple barrels and priced between $500 to 900.
The most expensive one I ever bought was $325 for a brand new 14" 223 at an auction for a gun store that went out of business.

Thats why I ended up with 7 contenders, 26 barrels, an encore that now has a 7mm mag rifle barrel.

My biggest gun sale regret is a Contender (not G2) I bought for a song, that I used for IHMSA - great trigger. In a fit of madness I sold it, haven't found one with quite the same trigger.

I believe these would cover it:
- 22LR Match
- 357 Max
- 7-30 Waters

I don't have a contender, though i have looked at them for years. I was interested in the various caliber choices. Most are relatively small calibers. Strangely enough, the last four or five contenders i have seen for sale were 45-70's. Are they just so punishing to shoot that people are selling them.

Only 3 barrels? That's tough....
1) 10" .22 match for silhouette & small game

2) 10" 32-20 ditto

3) 7-30 Waters for silhouette, larger varmints & big game


Now a days they all have glass of some sort on them.

Apt topic! Just bought into Contenders again and have my first 3 barrels.
14" .223 scoped
10" .357max red dot
10" 30-30 round barrel scoped
The last one was nostalgic and practical, the first one because I'm sitting on a pile of ammo that will take me years to shoot single shot, and the max., because it's the point of having a contender.

I'd definitely go with..

#1 .22 long rifle, carbine barrel.
Squirrel and small game..

#2 7mmTCU .. carbine .
Squirrel to Deer. And everything in between.
(I could ? If I absolutely had to.. use the 7mmTCU for everything.)

#3 7-30 waters ..carbine
Deer ..hogs... And anything else in the state of Missouri.

VINCENT, you didn't specify rifle or pistol for the three barrels, so here's both:

PISTOL Barrels
1) 22lr Match, 10inch. I've shot some that had rifle accuracy at 100 meters. (our NRA silhouette range is in meters)
2) 7TC. 10inch. Very accurate, low recoil Metallic Silhouette round. Cheap to form. Inexpensive brass.
3) 357mag 10inch. Fun Metallic Silhouette Hunters Pistol round

RIFLE Barrels
1) 22lr Match. Lotsa fun
2) .204 Ruger Smokin' fast & fun
3) 22 or 22K Hornet. A delight to shoot

48 Woody I have a 35 Remington Super 14 when I shoot 5 shot groups with it my fingers joints on my support hand bleed from the trigger spur. I can only imagine what the 45-70 would do.

MGM 14" .22LR Match - Cheap, fun, practical, accurate
MGM 10" 7.62x39 - Surprisingly accurate with even surplus ammo, mild recoil,
MGM 14" .223 Match, Threaded for suppressor - Because it is cheap to shoot and fun

I could live with .22lr, 38/357 and 7mm TCU.

Just got a 30 carbine barrel, might have to at least play with it a little but don't think I'd give it up for the 7mm.
