Well, they ALL get used sometimes, but I have a couple that are the cutlery equivalent of "Barbecue guns"

Stick it in a drawer and ruminate on man's acquisitive folly. Then take it out, use it, ding the stock/handle etc. Then ruminate on the privilege of being surrounded by beautiful things.

Im thinning the inventory. Now, if I cant bring myself to use it, I sell it. The older I get the less I want or need stuff that I dont use. After having been executor of my late dad's estate I learned a few things.

I don't buy knives, I get em as gifts for "the guy that has everything". They are in every drawer here @ the house and camp with a couple more stashed in presentation cases. sigh! I need to order some stuff so I can open boxes with em I guess.

For most things there is a spectrum of "bought to use" and "bought as art".
Knives, cars, fountain pens, watches, etc. etc.

IMHO there is no "right answer", there are only personal opinions and choices.

I am lucky enough to have the funds that permit me to have knives (and some other items) all across that spectrum.

I will never tell another person what they "have to do" with their possessions. If you want to use your mint 1963 Corvette in a demolition derby, it's yours, go do so. If I want that car preserved then I should come up with the money to buy it from you prior to your entry of it into the competition.
