Shouldn't be a problem. Same action as the 5mm Rem Mag. The 580 series have one of the strongest small actions. 6 locking lugs. Also has a 60 degree bolt lift unlike typical 90. Plus the 580 is single shot so you won,t have to worry about feed problems fron a mag. Unless you have fat fingers.

I had a 581 converted. Works fine. 580 should be a simple swap.

That was my next question, what cost am I looking at for this project? And what barrel should I use?

It's not a hard build, especially if you can find a take off HM2 barrel. The tenon can be turned on a Ruger or Anschutz 64 action barrel as well as others and made to fit. Some you may have to cut a second extractor slot but no biggy. I have a 581 with an Anschutz barrel, a Volquartzen Summit with an ER Shaw barrel and a TC R55 and they all shoot very similar so I'm not sure your going to see huge differences.

I wouldn't be afraid to get a Green Mountain, ER Shaw, Lothar Walther, Lilja or anyone else that will chamber it for you. Make some calls and see what they will do.

One suggestion would be that if you don't have the 580 yet, buy a 581 instead. I doubt you will see any difference in accuracy but if it's a squirrel rifle it will be a better option for follow up shots and multiple squirrels. I believe Pwnolan makes single shot adapters if you want to shoot it off the bench. Good luck, great platform to work with.

I had several blanks left over from when Winchester stopped making 9417 lever guns. Had a local gunsmith install in a 581 action and added a stock I traded into.

Love the looks of that rifle, great stock, good barrel and action and one of my favorite calibers.
