17HMR/HM2 Barrel question

Are the .17 barrels identical?

If I have a 457 with a 17HMR barrel, can I shoot 17HM2 through the same barrel by simply changing the magazine or are there other differences?

No, you cannot shoot HM2 in a 17HMR barrel. Two totally different rounds. One based on 22LR and the other based on 22Mag.

There are other differences.
17hm2 is based on a .22lr cartridge while 17hmr is based on a 22wmr cartridge.

The .17 HMR is based off a 22wmr case and the .17Mach 2 is based off the stinger case which is smaller in diameter that the 17 HMR .

This is correct. The 17 HM2 is based off the CCI Stinger round. Although it is still listed and sold as a 22LR the case is longer than the normal 22LR case.

I have a CZ457 22 LR if I wanted a 17 barrel what are the pros and cons of a 17 HM2 vs the 17 HMR Is the 17 HMR the more popular? I would not be hunting anything but long range golf balls and the like

17 HMR is by far the more popular.

HMR is much faster and flatter shooting than HM2. Also ammo is much easier to find. Probably about equal for accuracy.
