Yes, that is a "GroundHOG." If you weighed it I bet it would likely be a record holder.

Maybe, Idk. I do know I've seen bigger ones around, just not this year. A few years back I was hunting a farmer's field not far from here, when I topped a rise and spooked a big one. The old ones don't hang around long you know! When he was running to his hole I swear he looked like a throw rug with legs!

That's funny. I can see him now.

Anybody ever hear one? I think they are the silent Ninjas. I rarely, if ever hear them. I hear the squirrels, the deer, the fox, the racoons, the rabbits. But I never hear the groundhog. Heck, I've even seen them run across dry leaves and not a rustle. I never even heard one whistle. Whistle Pig, my ...

Got 4 more tonight. This brings the Talley to 23 for the season. One with the 223 at 225 yards. These three with the Savage B17 all at 100ish.

Groundhogs

actually make a whistling sound. Hence, they are also called "whistlepigs." I've heard my share of them. Back in my twenties, I had permission to hunt a sod factory. The groundhogs were tearing up the edges of the sod fields.

I heard them "talking" to one another after I entered the field. I could see them running towards their respective holes. They seemed to "whistle" from the edge of the burrow creating a hollow whistle. Kind of neet.

Yeah, I've heard them do it a few times. Distinctive sound! I've found that you can often get their attention by making a short loud whistle. For instance, if grass is long and hogs are hard to see I'll blow sharply across a spent 22lr shell I keep in my pocket for the purpose. Many times the sound will cause a nearby groundhog to stick their head up to see what's going on, and

I'll give a spent .22LR case whistle a try. I've heard recordings of their whistle on YouTube, but never in the field.

The healthy soy is 3' tall now and all the growth is making it more challenging to catch glimpses of the hogs.

I use a $5 dog whistle. Seems to work pretty well. I will give the 22 case a try also.

Nice! And that looks like a sweet Fieldmaster.

I've been shutout this whole week. I've seen five, but none presented a shot opportunity. Three dashed into their holes at about 10 and 15 yards away from me. The other two were about 200 and 275 and didn't hang out long enough for me to dare take a poke at them.

No matter. Eika had a blast and I got in six 3 mile hikes this week.

Thanks, its a 150th Anniversary from 1966. Scope is a Bushnell from roughly that era. I admit that Sam, my mtn cur, helped me find her. I'd aimed for her neck and pulled it slightly. She ran about 20 feet into tall grass, and so I took the dog and we found her. Sam was quite pleased.

Awesome. I have a 552 and enjoy it a lot. Also love that your dog got into the act! Give him a "Good boy." and pats from me.

At any rate, she says thanks!
