Drill 'em and post the video Dave.
I wanna hear them babies sing.

I received the 10 lb box of polyfil.
Tried it out with the pellet rifle.
Lesson one....break it up into small bundles.
Otherwise finding the projectile is the proverbial needle in the haystack.

Second lesson...each bundle gets a single shot.
It knocks the bundle flying off the support,
killing the energy faster, less chance of mushrooming.

A single shot at an aimpoint on each bundle,
I can recover the projectile and know if it hit or missed the bull.
That way a comparison can be made between those that hit and the fliers.
No guessing which is which if multiples were to be fired into a single bundle.

Always fun figuring out the rules to a new game, eh?

leenie-- I couldn't help but notice your "edit" note below your last post. That's pretty funny. And here you thought nobody was reading your posts

Just to let ya' know, 10 lbs of poly-fil will stuff 24 four gallon trash bags.
That's about 6 ounces of fill per bag...kinda sorta.
Hard to be exact with a hand full of fluff.

What? Time to kill waiting for Isaias to wander past.
Tropical storm season in my neck of the woods.

The polyfil may just work.
14.3 grain pellet at just over 500 fps is captured by one 6 ounce bag of fill.
At 10 feet the pellet punched through the bag, but was stopped, entangled by a wad of poly-fil.

The fil extended about an inch and a half outside the bag, pellet hidden in the wad.

Bit of digging exposed the pellet

No visible damage to the nose or skirt on the pellet.
The rifling grooves are visible on the edges of the dome and skirt.

Next trip to the range, see how many bags it takes to stop a hi-v 22lr.

I am so easily entertained.

200 yards, one shot at a time to walk down and recover?
Not me. Ma didn't raise a total lunatic.

I'll do some preliminary work at 25 yards to determine the limitations of the polyfil.
See how far a hi-v 40 grain penetrates and if a 36 grain hp mushrooms.
Then send some more Eley Action as shipped, shoulder nicked and skirt nicked
so we can look closely at the fired bullets and determine the differences.
Try to better understand why those skirt cuts stray off so badly.

If this polyfil does allow bullets to be recovered undamaged,
I have a batch of really bad CCI SV that need to be fired and looked at.
Even at 50 yards this lot is spitting 1.5 inch strays.

Polyfil might end up being a useful diagnostic tool.
Recovered bullets could indicate burrs in the leade or rough bore/crown.
All you'd need to do is grab a magnifier and compare bullets from decent results and cr*p.
Handy when you get a problem rifle and trying to figure out why.

The question is: Will poly-fil catch and trap a 22lr hollow point without mushrooming it?

Took over one of the action bays this morning
so as not to interfere with anyone using the rifle ranges.
Set up a cardboard tube filled with 6 four gallon plastic bags,
with about 6 ounces of poly-fil in each. Stepped back ten feet
and using a single six revolver with Fed 36 gr cphp, sent one.

Pulled out one bag at a time checking for holes front and rear.
First three bags showed the bullet had passed through.
The fourth bag only showed a hole in the front. Bullet caught.

Bit of digging around in the fourth bag and found the bullet wrapped in polyfill.

Dug it out and unwrapped it.

So the answer is yes, poly-fil can catch a 22lr and no, the bullet doesn't mushroom.

Yes you did flangster...the prize was: a handful of poly-fil.
That's about a third of an ounce of fluff....do you want it mailed to you...
or should I wait until the wind is blowing y'er way and toss it?

Looks like a handy diagnostic tool, doesn't it?

So the next question was: What'll happen with a rifle?

Unpacked the CZ 455 Lilja

Loaded another Fed 36 gr cphp and again at 10 feet squeezed the trigger.
Oooops.....fluff everywhere.

The higher mv obtained from the longer barrel blew right through 6 bags
and the rear cover...

Had to pick up all the fluff off the berm.

Good thing I have plenty of poly-fil and cardboard tubes.

With the next try, found the bullet trapped in bag number 7.

And again, no mushrooming.

This is gonna be very useful.
