They're firm but not solid. Never watched the guy I give em to to find out how he does it. My wife doesn't eat em so I like the dutiful hubby that I am do w/o. Snowshoe hare I keep tho and they're a lot bigger and more tender as in I've roasted a few over the open fire a few times with a bit of salt and a beer.

Nite before last a **** set off my critter alarm when it came in looking to raid the feeder. Twas too dark out even with all the snow and it not holding still long enough for a sure shot to the noggin. When it got 8' away from the basement slider door I opened the door and sounded off with my big dog barking, "I'm gonna tear you a new one", imitation and it took off at full throttle. They can really skedaddle and scale a 6' cedar fence like an Olympian when they want to. :D The **** was as big or bigger than the 35#er I took off the bird feeder last winter.
I'm working on an upgraded light setup/mount for my new CZ for the next time.
I don't fill the tweety feeders until the ***** are holed up but apparently this Yooper **** woke up hungry @ 19˚F.
