It is advertized as an "old model" Remington 552. Was there a 552 model like this?

Agree... that is one ugly rifle. Not like any Remington I've ever seen.

Sounds like someone has transplanted on a Remington butt plate.

He's pretty specific about it being a 552 - I wonder if someone has transplanted a 552 barrel?

it looks to me that the loading port is much farther back than the photo that Gordie shows

Definitely a Winchester Model 74, I see he has a couple for sale as well so I suggest it is a mix up of photos
As for the M 74 being ugly, beauty is in the eye of the beholder

And the M74 has rightly earned a reputation of being a solid, easy cleaned semi auto, remind me about the VIPER again

Ugly is ugly. It doesn't need to be a competition.

I thought it was a Winchester 74, but not having owned one myself I wasn't sure. I was pretty sure it wasn't a 552 speedmaster as I am very familiar with those. I have to admit that the Viper was pretty ugly.

The Model 74 always intrigued me, but I just never had an opportunity to own one, or at least didn't develop an opportunity to own one. I was once a serious Remington fanboy. Not as much these days, but still like the stuff they made in the past.

The Win M.74 is the second best Winchester .22 semi auto (M.63 is number one) and is a nice solid rifle for its time but the Remington M.550 is more interesting, design wise
In my opinion of course

Question

A friend has one of these under his bed last I saw it dusty but oily, I don't recall the brand! This begs investigation.

The Viper has an interesting history. Rem conducted three focus panels in various locations around the country before going into production with a new model to replace the Nylon 66. The panel members were provided with several guns, including prototypes to evaluate. The Viper was picked in all three groups.

The Viper had a heavy, two stage trigger and suffered from jamming problems, but over 244,000 were sold. Where are they? I haven't seen one in years.

And yes, they are ugly.

I wish I knew that about the Vipers, as a guy wanted to trade me one for something and it was so ugly I said no. Are they worth anything? PLEASE say no, as I will be mad I let it go.
