1-2. I am currently in the market for a .17HM2 rifle. I have shot one, and read a lot, I think it suits my needs perfectly. But, I gotta say, I'm a little disheartened, when my gunshop told me that none of their distributors are stocking the CZ-452, in 17HM2, and he can't order it. So, I'm currently trolling, and will find one soon enough.
3. Well, if I buy the gun, I'd like to be able to get ammo.
4. I currently shoot several K .22LR. The .17HM2, would replace a large % of that.
5. I just paid $11/box for Lapua Midas L, 22LR, and thought it was a smokin deal. So, I guess I'm not too price sensitive in the ammo dept.

Yes I shoot the MK2
I have 1 contender carbine so chambered.
It's a wonderful small game and plinking round. Be a shame to lose it.
I fired a couple of thousand rounds last year. It seems more rounds per range
trip every time I go.
$3-$6 a box is resonable.

Does anyone care if the .17 mach 2 dies out?

I appreciate the from Houston-whap and Kzone Al--thanks guys! But I have to ask. Is anyone else contacting any of these magazines? Maybe they are, and I'm just not aware of it. If you are, it would help a lot if you would post that you did so, preferably in the "I've Done It!" thread I started. If no one else has even so much as sent an email to one of these magazines or some other magazine, I'm just curious why not?

Steve Boeltnor has done a fantastic job of spearheading an effort to get the message out to the ammo manufacturers, and to everyone who is responding to his survey, good for you; that's a help, and it's a start. But frankly I think it's going to take a lot more than that if it's not too late already. At this point, just about every major gun manufacturer that I'm aware of has now stopped production of the .17hm2. RicoCargo at the top of the page can't even find a CZ 452 in .17hm2. Some will argue that they will continue making .17hm2 ammo, and maybe that's true; but if so, for how long? And do you really want to leave that to chance? Sales of ammo are good now because everyone is stocking up on it because they're worried about it being gone in the future (which says a lot in and of itself). However, as another poster pointed out, you can only afford to buy so much for hoarding purposes, and what then? Ammo sales will be virtually nonexistent, and .17hm2 guns will no longer be made or available at that point, so there won't be any new .17hm2 fans because no one will be able to buy a gun in that caliber. Even if every major gun magazine gave whole-hearted endorsements of the .17hm2 for the next several months, because the gun manufacturers have stopped making the guns, there won't be any guns available for potential new fans to even buy. So anyone who gets pumped up on the .17hm2 by reading about it will just give up on the round when he tries to order a .17hm2 and there aren't any left! Someone like that is not going to then lobby the gun manufacturers to begin reproducing the gun; they'll just go buy another .17 HMR or something else. So, like I said, it may be too late already, but it's worth a try since the .17 mach 2 isn't actually in the grave yet.

But in order for the round to have a chance, ANYONE and EVERYONE on this site who is .17 hm2 fan is going to have to get involved, help out, take a stand and DO SOMETHING! Telling your buddies how much you like the round is helpful and so is responding to Steve Boetnor's survey, but that alone, while helpful, probably isn't enough to cut it. Le't say there are 100 .17hm2 fans here, and each one makes a believer out of 5 of his friends. That's still only 500 additional fans nationwide who probably won't even be able to buy a .17mach 2 anyway because the guns literally aren't made anymore!

In my opinion, the only way the .17 mach 2 has any real chance is if it starts getting some really great press from the major gun magazines. That's the only way the the majority of the shooting crowd is going to learn about how great the .17 mach 2 is! It's probably still possible to keep the round from being gone but only if EVERYONE on here who is a .17 mach 2 fan gets involved and lets some of these major publications know what a great a round the .17 mach 2 is! That's the only way that we're going to be able to get the word out to literally millions of shooters that the .17 mach 2 is an awesome little round! We really have to show the shooting world how great the hm2 is to get the widespread interest in the .17hm2 which is what will be needed to get the gun manufacturers to continue producing guns!

Think about it, if you were a gun magazine editor, would you try to help save some cartridge from extinction if 1 person emailed you about how great it was? I probably wouldn't either. How about if 10 people emailed you? Or 20? Or 30? Or 50? Now we're talking! So just ask yourself if you really want to save the .17hm2. If it really doesn't matter to you, then don't bother, but if it does matter to you and you really DO want to help save the .17 hm2, then what are you going to do about it? Is it worth the 3 to 5 minutes (at most) that it would take to click on an email address and in 3 to 5 brief sentences, write that "you and others love the .17hm2 and want to see it survive, and could they please help support this fantastic little round by doing more articles on it in their magazine," writing your name, and then clicking "Send"? If you really want to save the .17hm2 then DO SOMETHING TO HELP SAVE IT! Don't leave it up to Steve, me, your buddy/buddies or everyone else! If the .17hm2 is important to you, and you want to see the .17hm2 saved, then YOU do something about it! Actions speak louder than words. We can talk about how great a round it is on here all day, and granted that's fun. But it won't help save hm2. If WE ALL don't get the message out to most of the shooting world (i.e. millions) and SOON, VERY SOON, then get ready to kiss the .17hm2 goodbye!

Response:

1. I'm brand new to shooting the cartridge, but I took my time in deciding if the .17HM2 really would be an advantage - I decided it would be.

2. One. T/C 14" Contender barrel, soon to be converted to 16 1/2" carbine.

3. Yeah - seems to fill a niche, especially for those who hunt very small pests but don't need 100 + yard capability.

4. na

5. $4 a box, $25 a brick. Tall order for jacketed bullet, I know.

1. Do you currently shoot the .17 Mach 2?

Yes

2. How many firearms do you own that are chambered for .17 Mach 2?

One

3. Do you feel it is important to continue production of the .17 Mach 2?

Irrelavent

4. How many rounds a year (on average) do you shoot of .17 Mach 2?

1000

5. What is a reasonable price at which you will pay for .17 Mach 2?

$4 - $6/ box, maybe more for specialized ammo

Comment:
It will be interesting to see if the results of this poll correlate and support actual 17M2 sales. What will keep ammo available is sales. As long as someone's making money selling M2 it will be available. Hopefully with the uptick in ammo prices all rimfires will surge. Talking to the Lapua and CCI guys at ShotSHOW they both told me they were seeing large increases in rimfire ammo orders... fingers crossed!
