I have a M61 I wish to mount a scope but don't want to mount a 1" tube. I've tried to find a Wolf Pup with a duplex reticle but have been unsuccessful. Nor have I been able to find a used Baby Redfield. Any suggestions?? I'm not impressed with Barska, BSA etc

Original Lyman alaskan, or one of the newer production Alaskans that Leupold put out. I think that was in the 90's?

Agree that a lot depends on what kind of mount you have or want to use. If it's a side mount Weaver, you're pretty much stuck with using a 3/4 inch tube scope, so your options are very limited. The 'baby' Redfield is very good, but expensive. I don't know what the deal is with the Wolf Pup now. It appears to be in the process of fizzling out, I'm afraid. It appeared to have great promise, but now it's hard to even find one.
As for vintage scopes, I really like the Weaver J2.5. Optics are very good, just not coated, and it is a very durable scope, designed to handle the recoil of centerfire rifles. The J4 is a good scope, but it just looks too long. Another good one, if you don't mind the short eye relief, is the Weaver D4 or V22, but these have 7/8 inch tubes.
The Lyman Alaskan is a great old scope with superb optics, but you'll be lucky to find one for under $250. Leupold's version is even pricier, at least $450. Again, both of these have 7/8 inch tubes, and mounts are hard to find.

Weaver V22

You can use 1" rings and put the 7/8' adapters in.

Always baby Redfields available on Ebay from $150-$250. Set up ebay to follow your search and you will get an email when a scope is listed. You don't even have to check ebay until you get the email. Also Wolf pups available on Ebay.

I inherited this one with a Burris 4x scope (don't know the model or how old), which seems to be pretty good quality. I do need to find a cheek riser though.
