If you've been watching the Olympics this year, you may notice an unfamiliar abbreviation, ROC. It stands for the Russian Olympic Committee, and it's essentially a loophole that allows Russian athletes to compete in the Olympics while their country is banned from the Games because of its doping scandal.

Haven't been following much, but had assumed it was Taiwan (Republic Of China)

There's my "something new" for the day. Or the first one, anyhow.

I think that changed in the 90s, not the 70s.

Pro Russian hockey players dodged the pro rule by making em all soldiers hence weaseling their way around the rule book. It all went down hill after that.
Frankly I think its better now as its supposedly the best of the world's best, if you discount Russia once again changing the name to ROC to get around their banning because of doping.

The Soviets did that with many of their athletes. State jobs or military positions. Or provided free housing and a stipend. It was always a point of pride that the unpaid Americans usually beat them.

However, the Olympics have outlived their purpose.

The original spirit would always be welcome, in my opinion.

Unfortunately it's just been perverted into another media circus, like virtually all mainstream media these days.

In olden days, guys from France wouldn't have the opportunity to compete against guy from Australia, etc.. The Olympics brought people together that usually wouldn't have the opportunity to compete. Today, the Olympics are little more than another stop on the global circuit.

I'd be more inclined to say "Corporate Circus", which would include media but be FAR from confined to it.

Too much is about the money.

My buddy who lives up in Lake Placid told me they ripped out the ice oval in front of the high school where Eric Hieden skated for his medals. Also the Olympic center is being redone along with the ski jump. Not sure about the Miracle on Ice indoor rink. Seems to me Lake Placid looks to be wooing a future winter Olympic. Also Main Street along Mirror Lake is being redone. Fun town, just too far a ride for me. 3 1/2 hours.
