Silly question but want to be a legal beagle. Thinking of selling a barrel but it's S/Ned. It doesn't need to go thru FFL does it?

No a barrel does not need to go through an ffl, only the action.

No sir, barrels are not considered a firearm, serial number or not, at this time. You are safe shipping it to another individual. It does not have to go through a FFL.

My experience. Shipping from individual to individual does NOT require going through an FFL. Some retailers WILL ONLY ship a S/N barrel through an FFL. i.e. Ruger Mark IV barrel. I purchased this barrel from Volquartsen and paid $30 transfer fee and background check at local FFL. (see bullet point #4).

There are a few exceptions to every rule.

Ruger screwed that up for sure. Not sure how they got away with doing it that way. But it is what it is.

I was always under the assumption that the serial number had to be on the frame due to the trigger group being there. I guess not.

I`ll bet in the not so distant future though, every part will have a serial number eventually, and have to go through an FFL to buy anything.

Best bet today would be, buy everything you can, right now, while you still can!

I am an FFL in Texas. The Ruger Mark series is a barreled action with serial number, thus to ship across state lines it must go to an FFL. If the barrel with a serial number does not include an action or receiver an FFL is not required.
