Scenario time: Given the option, 452 or 457?

Would you choose a gently used 2004 452 American, 22LR, that has near perfect bluing, a tuned trigger (+/- 1.5#) with pretty decent, but not highly figured wood (minor dings), steel rings (not sure of make) and a nice Leupold M8 4x for $400...

Or

Your choice of a new, (starting at $500):
457 American
457 Lux
457 Jaguar

A friend of mine ran into that scenario yesterday. I spotted the 452 earlier in the day on FB post the shop posted, so after work we took a trip out to take a look...pretty good. He had it in hand and we were walking around the rest of the shop and we spotted the 457's...

He's been interested 457 American (but on the back burner) so, with both the 452 & 457 in front of him, he compared but was conflicted, to say the least...

So before I give his decision, what would you do?

For those prices, I don't see any reason to not buy the 452 and, for me, the Lux.

Either would be easy to pass on if not meeting expectations.

I would Buy the 452. They arent making them anymore. They will bemaking the 457 for the foreseeable future. Its a imho, better gun. And it comes complete, with scope and the trigger already done at 1/2 the price.

Personally, I'd buy both but in the spirit of the question, it would be the 452 because:
A: I don't have one yet.
B: I already have a couple of 457s.

I'm still kicking my self for not buying a 452 Scout that appeared on the used rack in my LGS the day I went in to pick up my new 457 Scout. That was almost 3 years ago and I haven't stumbled on to another.

To play along. IF only one the 452 would be an easy choice.

2many22s said it very well :
"They arent making them anymore."
"They will bemaking the 457 for the foreseeable future."
" Its a imho, better gun. "
"And it comes complete, with scope and the trigger already done at 1/2 the price."

easy choice, and a real decent price.

Lots of both on hand but considering how 452's have beens selling, probably the 452 unless the 457 had better wood.

457's had a mud looking finish, hard to tell grain, but nothing stood out, and the Jaguar has a beech stock...also the most $$$.

The finish on the 452 is classic polished blue; the satin finish on the 457 is unattractive, IMO, and much more difficult to touch up. I won't even get into the shape of the receivers or the bolts - 452 wins hands-down, IMO, of course. Not that I'm biased towards a classic look

Like when Volvo dropped the 240 line, and offered a Buick
Might have been a better car, but it sure wasn’t unique anymore.

With that description and at that price, definitely the 452 American. You'll be able to buy a 457 for quite some time down the road.

Absolutely no contest. 452. Prefer the threaded barrel to receiver union. In general, I would have to say the 452s are better assembled gun. Old school love. No longer own any CZ .22rifles but the best shooting ones were old 452s. One was especially accurate with a very good cold bore barrel.
