8.2 and the joys of tsunami alarms

Only time my town gets a mention on the news, some terrible crime stat or a big ol earthquake. Biggest one since 65', I'd rolled out a week ago and sitting in kodiak enjoying the sirens. 20 minutes till the waves hit, guessing if it didn't wallop the south end were not gonna get much. One day we'll be leveled like good Friday, guessing it won't be tonight.

Guessing the aftershocks have been intense, felt it on the boat. Felt like someone went through the harbor to fast. Don't usually feel them when floating.

Downside of living on a fault line.

We have these signs along the beach here. Pay no attention to them folks; every street, alley and sidewalk will become an evacuation route. Go East, young man.

We even have an alarm system for the hearing impaired now...

"This is the first official, scheduled test of the Beach Emergency Evacuation Lights System (BEELS), a new beach evacuation alert system designed for all beachgoers, including those who are deaf or hard of hearing."

Rumor has it one village has a 10 cm wave.

We endured much larger from idiots tearing out of the harbor like it was the end if days. Even though we had time between the impact and potential waves.

Sirens stopped around 1.

I don't mean to be callouse but I'm loosing track of how many "were all gonna die" scenarios I've lived through in my relatively short life.

Beginning to think collectively we as a culture should re evaluate the story of the boy who cried wolf.....

Yup. Can't dwell on it, but shouldn't ignore it, like so much in life. Bottom line- life'll kill ya.

Glad the tsunami threat turned out to be a dud this time.

According to my text message log, I've explained to 9 relatives that no, I didn't notice that earthquake here near Ketchikan. In fact, even though I'm in coastal Alaska and so was the 'quake, I'm closer to the Great Salt Lake than I am to the epicenter. Alaska is a big place...

If people only knew how big it really is....! And how sparsely populated by both man and beast.

Irony is I have a cabin right next to the epicenter, and had just pulled in to a town leveled in 1964...

But yeah Alaska is huge.

It took me 43 hrs to drive between the two aforementioned points by boat. To get to where one mountain is would take 4 as the crow flys by boat.

The crazy part is 400 miles away people felt this last one.

Pavlof is usually pretty visible from the cabin. A bit surreal to see for sure. We're supposed to head that way in the next few days for a few weeks with the boat. Next village down is at the base. We kinda joke about that a fair bit. Not the first time that village has been driven into the sea by a volcano, guessing won't be the last.

For as hot as it's been down south, yesterday it rained so hard it could drowned the fish.... think I was wet clear through my raingear. If this keeps up its liable to put out the volcano, swear I'll shave this fall and see a set of gills.

Lame summer so far, slow fishing and no bulk pack plinking. Only rimfire aboard is the g44 and the rusty trusty boat 1022. Don't think we've burned 50 rounds this season. That's down about 10,000 from 2019

New normal isn't much fun.
