Signalman - I must have been asleep at the keyboard I did not realize you also had a great start on collecting Marlins. What is interesting is that I have been looking at a gray, laminated stock Marlin with a SS barrel in 17 HMR myself. I'm not sure what the model is as the hook was not set deep enough to warrant my usual research activity when I find something that peaks my interest.

Now I will have to go back and see if it's a model 17VS, 917 VS, or something else.

RJ sir I had started with Marlins back in 2009 and have been buying them ever since I went sideways in 2015 when I started with my CZ collection...I felt I had all the Marlins I needed back in 2013-14. My Marlin 883 is MY RIFLE...first one out of the safe for any kind of shooting I have complete faith in this rifle...so much so that if our 9 year old foster child was out in the back yard and there was a snake or what ever and I had one shot one chance to protect her...then my 883 would be what I would use. I have shot things as small as grasshoppers 10 feet away to getting gophers at 125 yards out...and I have even impressed my older brothers with my shooting of this rifle so much so that they will stop shooting and spot for me.

The only rifle I own that will even hold a candle to my 883 is my CZ 452 FS in 17hmr which is really new compared to my 883 rifle.

Anyway I have never been let down with any of my Marlins...they all shoot very well but I have to go with results on how well I shot them. if the house was on fire and I could only save two...then these two would be it...a 22mag and a 17hmr.

sorry for being so long winded but I get excited when I talk about my full faith rifles and they are not many of them I can say that about. My 883 is the best rifle I have ever bought for what it can do...I paid about $180 for it...and for me its priceless now....never for sale and they are going to bury it with me.

I can talk for hours but now is not the time...go and check out that SS beauty...let us know what you found. I am so lucky I got this new to me SS fluted rifle and I have not even shot it yet...but from just holding it I have a winner...a Marlin bull barrel rifle that has great balance and 17hmr which rocks.

Edit: my Marlin 883 rifle in front...983 Fleur de Lis in back:

I'll mostly be shooting targets and a few squirrels.

GunsUnlimited in Omaha has a rack full of new Marlin rimfire rifles, including, I believe, at least one XT22VR. 402-339-0771.

RJ sir look for a 983 if you want a magnum it is drilled and tapped for scope rings. It also has the 900 series trigger.

Good luck on your quest.

But if you can find a 983 or 982. Pratice with either the 782,783, 883, and 882 they can shoot just as good maybe you need to lighten the trigger or maybe your like me and can survive with a heavy pull for hunting.

Marlin 917VS

Got my Marlin 917VS with Sweet Seventeen scope and an expensive case at a pawnshop about 6 years ago for $249. Wow, the .17 HMR really impressed me. One ragged hole off bench at 50 yards, groups under a dime at 100. Easily the most accurate rifle of any kind I have ever owned.

just a little back ground...I have been looking for another 17hmr rifle for the last 6 months or so...and it's been for a CZ 452 rifle with a recoil pad...but never found one. So I found my Marlin 17VSF which I thought I would never found one...now that it's mine...I am not looking any more.

I have not shot it yet...but I am totally happy.

Think Riflebasix trigger, first thing I do to every Marlin bolt action I've owned.

Those I can improve in my sleep, I've had a lot of practice on my own and other folks. All in what you're use to.

My last Marlin a 917m2 Stainless, drove to Southern Virginia twice to snatch it up, it was on consignment at a little shop out in the middle of no where, made an offer and had to go back a week later to pick it up. It's twin in .17hmr got me started on .17hmr's, very accurate but a brick.

Gerald sir I have never really been interested in the 17m2 but your rifle looks so good that I might just start looking for one...I have not shot any of my rimfire rifles in over a year now (wife's medical issues and passing) but the weather is changing and it's close to that time again for me to enjoy life again. I have a new girl friend and she says she likes to shoot so its time to break them out again.
