17hmr 50yd & 100yd Club

I'm very new to the 17hmr's and but would like to propose a fun shoot for the
17hmr shooters like the .22 guys have with less groups with the cost of ammo being considered.

Game #1 50 yards for 17hmr & 17hm2

Here are the rules:

1. Any 17hmr or 17hm2 rifle with any sights or scope
2. 50yards from rifle to target indoors or outdoors
3. 2, 5 shot groups on one target, add the two together and divide by 2 for
the average, if the average size is .300" or less makes the club
4. One of the targets below must be used to participate.
5.2 single shots per target need to be shot to determine bullet diameter
6. Groups are figured by measuring outside to outside and subtracting the bullet diameter (avg of the two single shots)

Let the fun begin. :AR15firin

Game #2 100 yards for 17hmr & 17hm2

Here are the rules:

1. Any 17hmr or 17hm2
2. 100 yards from rifle to target
3. Any stock, Any scope, Any sights
4.2, 4 shot groups, measured outside to outside and subtracting the bullet diameter (avg of the two single shots)
5. Average for the 2 groups= 1.00" or less and your in the CLUB
6. One of the targets below must be used to participate

GOOD LUCK! I'll keep a second list of the 100 yard CLUB members.

Another Target that can be used is below. The cross hairs are slightly thicker, and the "square" is "1 inch" for reference while shooting the 1.00" or less groups for the 100 yard club. Just another option for you.

Just so I understand how to measure my groups let me see if I have this right. First I measure the widest distance from outside edge to outside edge of my first group. Then I do the same for the second group. Then I average the distances of the two groups. And here is where I get confused-then I subtract the diameter of the bullet? Why do that? Isn't the size of the groups good enough? And what the heck is the diameter of a .17HMR bullet anyway?

#287 ·
You have to shoot 2 sighters on each target away from your groups. You also have to use the official target (found on the first page, post #1) to submit it and there is a spot for the 2 sighters. Don't shoot more than 4 shots per group at 100 yards and 5 shots per group at 50 yards.
You measure each sighter and the average size of them is your bullet diameter as the paper shows. You measure each of your groups and use that size minus the average size of your sighter shots to get your groups size which is a center to center measurement.
The 100 yard challenge is fairly easy but the 50 yard is very hard. Good luck.

Happy to make it

Thanks, I was glad to make the 50 yard part as that is so challenging. Actually, with my Marlin and the Rifle Basix trigger it was easier than I thought but my Savage has been teasing me with almost making it. I was shown how to adjust the trigger on it and hope to make another run at 50 yards with it.
Thank you for hosting this challenge and it has been fun. Now I need to get the Savage into the 50 yard challenge and I will be happy.

Here is my submission for Game #2 17HMR club.

Looks like the first Weatherby XXII 17HMR in the club. I wanted to do the 100 yard club because it looked harder but looking at the fewer members in the 50 yard club maybe not. I will try the 50 yard club next.

The stock is very comfortable. Good thing. Shooting off my wiggly folding table freezing in the damp conditions I layed on that thing nearly an hour before I had a couple targets that passed. I want to try the 50 yard game before the year is over. I had a bunch of sub 1/2 MOA groups but do you think I could ever do it twice on the same piece of paper? Not! It was really fun. Now I wish we had a rimfire club nearby, cause this stuff is addictive. I am usually a hunter and informal long range steel gong shooter with my centerfires. I like a challenge.

Spent a beautiful afternoon at the range, walked out with out my "official" targets, no matter no money or trophy so its all for fun anyway, think I did okay with the Anschutz 1717D and Hornady 17gr vmax.
50 yard

and 100 yard

Crappy photos don't know what's up with that.
I didn't think the Anschutz would be hard to get into this one. I know it won't count, no matter.:D

#298 ·
Thank you Frank, that Anschutz has always been a great shooter from day one, I'm just not much of a "game player" but had given it a good deep cleaning and needed to resight it anyway. Yesterday was a beautiful day to shoot, sunny, no wind and temps in upper sixties. Doubt I'll ever make an "official" run at it now, but it was fun.:t

After a bunch of tries over the past 3 weeks with the brand new Cooper LVT it looks like she's finally settling down. These were shot with CCI V-Max in a very slight breeze off of sandbags. I think it's legible in the pics, but the edge-to-edges were 0.393 and 0.420 for an average CTC of 0.2355.

I can live with that. I'll try at 100yds this weekend and see what happens. :bthumb:

CAMAC -New To Rimfire Central

Hi guys, I am new to the site but have owned a sako quad 17HMR for a few years now. I live in Northern AUS.
I had three goes at this yesterday. With the "official" two targets the three pairs of 50yd groups av were 0.6225, 0.468, 0.352 in fairly good conditions. It certainly is a great challenge for this caliber even in calm conditions.
I have had a long quest for accuracy with this rifle and am finally starting to get there. I hope to share some of this and get any feedback I can and look forward to posting some of our findings and fun on the way. Hope to post one under "Quest for Accuracy" with some good photos of blown shells, headspace etc. Started at > 2.5MOA and have gradually brought rifle (and myself) down to shooting reasonably well now (although as everyone has stated, 2 in a row is a lot harder.)

first post

I'm also new to RFC even though I have been reading here for the past 6 months. I'll be shooting for the 50 club this weekend and will post targets if I make it or not. I'll be punching holes with my savage 93R17BTVS with a BSA sweet 17 3-9X40 Scope. The weather should be in the 60's with a little wind but it should be fun either way as long as the **** cows don't get in the way  since I'll be out in the pasture not at a range but that's a story for a different time. :D

Thanks mchughcb, I have certainly got the "gauge" of how hard this is and can only think it is sponsored by the ammo manufacturers. No doubt I will be another to go through a slab of ammo before realising I can't ever get there. I have my best batch of ammo so far and rifle "tuned" as much as I possible so I suppose it is now or never - just waiting for a calm day again. Trying to work out how to post some pics.
