Custom Winchester M-70 back from the stock checkerer

Last week I got the stock for my custom Winchester Model 70 back from Evan, aka ek-marlin-424, who had checkered it for me.

A bit of history: I bought the rifle, engraved by Montana engraver Jerome Glimm, many years ago. It came in a nondescript featherweight stock, but the rifle was so nice I bought it anyway. When Winchester closed their doors back in 2006, I was able to acquire a few Custom shop stocks which I filed away for future projects. One of them was just perfect for the .300 WSM I had purchased. Fast forward to our present COVID times, and with knowledge of my mortality newly highlighted, I decided to finally get some of my many projects completed. So I sent the uncheckered stock to Evan, who worked with me to create the checkering pattern you see here.

Before: a nice stick of walnut that just looked, well ---- naked ----- without checkering.

After Evan worked his magic:

As the pictures show, Evanís artistry and fine craftsmanship truly brought my project rifle to completion. I hope to carry it afield this Fall. I don't know that it will improve my hunting success, but I will certainly enjoy gazing at it as I hunt!

All the bestó

Absolutely stunning!! I don't think I could ever bring myself to take something that gorgeous/blemish free out of the house, much less to the woods! Knowing my luck, it wouldn't come back looking the same!

I've missed seeing Evan's work on these pages...

Gorgeous stock and the checkering is just icing on the cake...

I think beautiful firearms are meant to be used and enjoyed! For example, my go-to shotgun is a Grade IV Browning Superposed engraved (and signed on both sides) by Louis Vrancken.

Some folks think I'm crazy to carry that too. But I derive far more joy in using these fine firearms than I ever would just sequestering them away in the safe, never to see the light of day.

All the best---
