06 May 08 Update

Thanks one and all for responding. This was not a "scientific poll" but if I had to draw any conclusions (1) it looks like the problematic lots of AM were few but (2) unfortunately those lots were distributed by no less than a couple of the biggest retailers in the US. (3) Looks like Federal and the retailers stepped up and replaced the product when there was a problem. If we are going to ding'em for letting this product out of the factory w/o good QC we have to give them good marks for customer service. I like AM a lot. It's good that some of the most recent posts indicate current lots are performing well & as expected. Let's hope this was just a bad patch of road and we're past it all now.

Take care and thanks again,

Smallgroups

Hello all,
I keep seeing posts regarding various lots of Federal AM 22 LR that are giving problematic performance.
Rather than mix and match is data all over the site why not put it in one place say as a reply to this thread starter.

Provide the following:
Lot
Where Purchased
Problem
Reported to Federal/Other Yes or No
Outcome

If the system will let me I will summarize it in a table and append it to this note as an edit

I just picked up 2 boxes of 1BW426 at Wal Mart.

Tried one box last night.....about 50 rounds of it.....no problems at all so far; so I'm assuming that box is good. Hopefully the other one is also.

Lot - 1BW410 & 1BW426
Where Purchased - WalMart
Problem - Weak rounds every so often.
Reported to Federal/Other Yes or No - Yes
Outcome - Sent 8 1/2 boxes back on Federals expense. Federal mailed (7) Wally World bulk packs by mistake and was told to keep them . Their mistake in shipping. Got a response that replacement ammo should be ready by end of April and will be receiving 12 boxes of AM22 to replace returned 8 1/2 boxes . Great customer service from Federal .

How does a "poor crimp" cause a .22 round to print several inchs low as if under powered? Has anyone looked at the ammo before they fired it to see just how loose the bullet is? I'm having a hard time accepting this.

Sav99age, I bought a bulk box of 350 or what ever they come in, from Walmart before reading about all the problems with the different lot #'s. Mine is 1BW410 and it stinks. Period. I will admit that I'm not checking each bullet for tightness before shooting it, but after firing it in my Savage bolt action, I can tell you just by the sound of it whether the soot and smoke is all the way down the side of the case, halfway down, or just a little down, or none at all. Trust us that are stuck with it, its not good.

I'll guess that the poor crimp is not building enough pressure to burn it properly. When you do get a good one, or 2-3 in a row, its nicely accurate, sounds right, and has no soot on the side of the case.

What else besides the crimp would cause these changes? And the fact that the factory admits they have a crimp problem with a few lots?

I think its more than poor crimp. I only had one box of 1bw411 so I just shot it up to get rid of it. There were lots of weak rounds with soot covered cases, but four rounds out of the box were very, very weak. They just made the slightest pop, like they didnt have any powder all, and I was surprised the bullets even cleared the barrel.

Now that I could believe. I think there is more to the story than we are being told.

Federal is taking care of their customers and that is what counts.

well, the brown truck just dropped off a small shipment of ammo which
included two boxes of AM-22, ordered from Ables Ammo.

1st thing i did was check the lot #'s and yep, 1BW412, which seems like
a "bad" lot. will give some of each box a try and see how they do. will
be counting the holes in the target, tho' lol,

good thing i only ordered 2 boxes,

rico....

well, did some shooting, 20 rnds, not enuff to do a good test, but they all
sounded the same, nice "loud" bang out of a 17" bbl. will keep an eye on them
and keep counting the holes as i shoot them.

rico....

FWIW: Lot 1BY588 is outstanding.

Pleasant surprise when grouped at 50'. Average of seven 5-shot groups was 0.122". Outshot some high priced Eley. We'll see what it does at 50yd.

Also have a box of 1BR643 but haven't had a chance to shoot it.
