Under or Overrated?

Hi Folks!

As some of you might know, I’ve been building a project Quad, which is finished to the point where all I have to do is decide which barrels to use with which loads …

And while I been satisfied with the Lilja barrels I’ve been able to try and very satisfied with the Hart barrel I ordered, I’ve found that the factory pencil barrels actually shoot very well. For example, at the range today …

Is it possible we’ve been discounting the quality/consistency/accuracy of the factory barrels?

Thanks!
Dave

There's absolutely nothing wrong with a stock Quad barrel. Nice shooting!

Thanks! And while the shooting situation was good, it wasn’t ideal. The bench was slightly shaky and the air wasn’t completely calm.

On the plus side, the Quad is such an easy gun to shoot. It lets you concentrate on shooting technique.

Enjoy!

Semi related question. Does the Quad shares a similar "paperclip" spring ejector design attached to the magwell guide like we have in the T1X?

Thanks.

I know my Quad shoots very well with the .17 HM2 factory barrel out to 100 yards. So well in fact - I have not even tried the .22lr or .17 HMR barrels I have for it. I wil probably give them a try in the spring when the weather allows for some serious range work. With that said, I have every reason to expect them to shoot well also.

Sometimes you get lucky like you did and get a good factory barrel. Now you can spend your money on something else nice targets.

Like this?

Photo from Brownells.com

This is the magazine well for a Quad. Sounds the same as your Tikka.

The Quads, Tikkas and FinnFires (all Sakos) all have a similar wire ejector set-up. I have two Quads, two FinnFires, and now a T1x, and none with ejection problems or issues -- yet. And I'm hoping, ever.

Having owned six Quads and now a T1x as well I too have been fortunate with ejection not having been a problem, however some folks have had enough problems for all of us.

Wow! If you can shoot those groups consistently with that factory barrel, you'd just be throwing money away by buying any aftermarket replacement. I can't see how you could improve on that!

It's close, closer than I ever would have expected. I have a Hart barrel that's probably more consistent, especially when you're dealing with heating issues, but it's also a pound heavier.

Enjoy!
