Light day on the schedule. Dinner for six on the now shady east porch planned for 1800. It will be a chance to show off the new lighting arrangement resulting as a spin-off from the electrification project. That means a day of power washing the outdoor furniture and pavers in addition to the dinner preps themselves.

We would enjoy a pic of the new lighting!

Mike Clark: I thought of Rhody last night. My wife and I went eat at a place "on the water". Not really on the water but close enough that it was the view.

Wanted to repost this in the new TWH Mike.

That looks like a really nice place! Glad you enjoyed it!

I probably should have stated that as "1800 hrs."

TMIMITW will tackle some weed whacking of the grass along the edge of the inner perimeter wall and the path down to the chickens if he arrives in time. It's that time of year when I get concerned about unexpected encounters with Jake Noshoulders.

All the rain has the grass now to just about knee height. I like to let it go to seed before mowing but prefer to keep it short in certain spots so it's easier to spot Jake before the last second.

I found a 5' long bull snake in with the chickens a couple of days ago. The bull snake isn't a concern but that enclosure is what I thought to be pretty snake proof. I'm not concerned for the chickens but I'd rather not meet a rattler in there while picking up eggs.

Then two nights ago as I was coming in off the east porch ... in the dark... I spotted something on the threshold of the door. Flipped on the lights and saw it was a 3' long bull snake. Glad I spotted it before opening the door and giving it a shot at getting inside but, again, the inner perimeter is supposed to be snake proof so I'm wondering how it got in.

Well, let the guessing and puzzle solving begin anew. The only difference this time is that I now know what it is.

Off to dig a grave...looks like it could be in the rain. Small community cemetery, so graves are mostly hand dug. Volunteered for the job when I moved to the community cuz I reckoned it would be good therapy. Plus, moi is an artiste with shovel and mattock...literally one with crude digging tools. The steady, hypnotic rhythm of steel striking dirt is an strangely zen experience.

As is the silent contemplation of one's own mortality.

As for unauthorized snake infiltration, many of the larger species are good climbers, so maybe the bull snakes entered over the fence, etc. Rattlers, being thick bodied ambush predators, will not climb over things.

Caesar Augustus was the "founder" and namesake of the spousal unit's home town and my first/last permanent duty station. They still unearth Roman artifacts there and the Roman Museum is a fascinating visit.

Your mystery thing appears to be a coax trimmer, at least that is the best I can do. Pretty old looking at that.
