Does sound like you had to crank at it to get the forend off, so it more than likely misaligned the barrel nut. The nut itself can be aligned with a deep-well spanner wrench, but your strap wrench should do the trick. I align every one of them by hand before they go out. Imagine that! It's a lot of work, I'll tell ya. If you can align it again, then great! If not, just send it back and we'll get it running.
So far I have not run into any problems that I've not dealt with on previous builds. Even on new builds the gas tube may need to be tweaked a bit to get it to line up without binding. I've had to do it before. If the gas tube binds on the gas key it can cause jamming, as in this case, or even screw up accuracy if really bad.
I am not a big fan of the Hogue handguard, although it is fine for most situations. I plan to do quite a bit of bench shooting for ammo testing and may substitute another handguard I have on hand that will be more appropriate for that use. Also, I have a Harrell's Tuner/Brake that is threaded 1/2"-28 that will be used to compare to groups with the thread protector attached. Should be interesting!
